Matthew Good and band plus Automatic Loveletter! Woo!

Apr 01, 2010 01:24

It's a double-header of concert photos as I try to catch up on stuff before going out of town! (NYC, WOO. I have SO MANY PLANS AND PEOPLE TO SEE, IT IS RIDICULOUS. THERE WILL BE BOOK READINGS AND BARBECUES AND GEEK MOVIE NIGHTS AND COMIC ART MUSEUMS AND VISITS WITH FRIENDS. AND ALSO: ANOTHER MATT GOOD SHOW. YES REALLY.)

Previously, we had Jack's Mannequin Show from March 4th Woo! (with Sunday's Roulette, Vedera, and Fun.)

And now, we have Automatic Loveletter and Matthew Good and his band. Awesomesauce.

So. IOTA. Naomi and I got there early so we could have dinner before the show. And dinner? Was amazing. I had crab and brie quesadillas with apple chutney. And LET ME TELL YOU SOMETHING, INTERNETZ. I wanted to marry that apple chutney. Or at least obtain a big jar of it to take home with me. So. Good. And of course we also had a nice glass of wine with dinner.

Me to Naomi: "Now, don't let me have too much wine. Last time by the end of the show I think I'd had a little too much."

Naomi: *responds with the equivalent of "WOOOOOOO, YOU PARTY DOWN, GIRLFRIEND. WIIIIIIINE. I WANT ANOTHER GLASS RIGHT NOW HEY WHERE'S THE BAR LET'S GO."*

She is such an enabler. Heh.*

*Pls. note, 'Naomi and Em On Wine' may be slightly exaggerated for comedic effect. There may not have been a "wooo" in every sentence.

So after dinner we went over to the bar side and got ANOTHER GLASS OF WINE WOO and I was drinking something called Seven Sisters (white) and I cannot remember what-all is in this stuff, but it's actually seven white wines mixed together. And that kind of sounds like a horrible concept but I was like, "Eh, I'll try it!" and I liked it pretty well. (I know it had both Gewurtztraminer and Muscat, two wines I like.)

So we met some nice fans at the bar. In the last few days Matt started up this premium content area on his site (M+), which you have to pay to have access to, and, you know, of course I paid, because I am powerless against promises of bits of music and talk about music and music-y things and podcasts that contain funny voices and also, there is a discussion forum, and I love me a good forum. And I had told Naomi about it and then we ran into Eileen and some others while at dinner, that I'd just talked to on the forum the day before (hello Eileen!). So these folks at the bar were talking about Matt's music and Naomi was like, "Are they from the forum?" and I'm all, "Well I don't know, seeing as I don't know them!" So we asked (why not? They are MG fans. MG fans are friendly!). And they aren't on the forum, but they are BIG MG fans, and we ended up having a really great conversation (hello, Chris and Rebecca and Jason!) and might get together and hang out because LOCAL MG FANS ARE LOCAL. And unexpected. Heh. We also met a couple named Cory and Nicole who were there for Automatic Loveletter, and convinced them they should stay and listen to at least a little MG, and then I met a very nice gal who turns out to be the AL guitarist's girlfriend and we may hopefully run into each other at the NY show, but she's local too (local music fans, yay!), and then AL started playing and were VERY GREAT and I will definitely have to pick up some of their songs (I hadn't heard them before, although I'd heard of them.)

And then there was a break, and I tried not to be in the way of the crew breaking down and setting up, and then Matt and the band came on (WOO) and the rest of the concert is pretty much a blur of WHEEE MG SONGS SUNG BY MG, FUN. Heh. And the whole band is just awesome and I was closest to Stu so I got to watch him rock out on some of the parts, which was fun, and Blake in the back is one very excited (in a fantastic way) drummer, and Milos was waaaaay over on the other side but he was great, and of course Matt is Matt and = fantastic live music, so it was all good times. And then there was the part where the band had just ordered drinks and then Matt was giving Stu a hard time about stuff (teasingly) and Stu just looked SO SAAAAAD.

Em: HEY BARTENDER JASON. ANOTHER GLASS OF WINE. OH, AND LISTEN, STU'S NEXT TWO DRINKS ARE ON ME. THEN MAYBE HE WON'T LOOK SO SAAAAAD.

This is what happens when I have wine, people. It's a good thing I don't go clothes shopping after a few glasses or I'd be in real trouble - glamorously attired but living in a box. Heh.

I did note that the vocals were a little softer than I expected, and apparently right in front of the stage it was hard to hear? And Matt explained that it is because of speaker placement in the venue (which wasn't an issue last show because last show was acoustic). *I* didn't really hear too much of a difference from the volume I expected over on the side where I was, but it definitely shows up in some of the video I tried to take. You could hear it better in person.

So after the show of course Naomi and I hung out at the bar for a bit.

Naomi: WOOO ANOTHER GLASS OF WINE BARKEEP.
Em: WOOO YES PLEASE.

And we said hello to Milos and ended up having a lovely conversation with him, and then it turned out Matt remembered me from the last show, so I chatted with him for a bit, and then suddenly, it was 2 am.

Post-show cell phone conversation:

Naomi: WOO, HEY I AM ALREADY HALFWAY TO YOUR APARTMENT WHERE ARE YOU?
Em: STILL HERE BUT ON MY WAY THERE WHY ARE YOU WALKING HOME BY YOURSELF DOOFUS.
Naomi: I DUNNO I WANTED TO.
Em: ZOMG WE HAVE TO GO TO WORK TOMORROW EFFING EARLY DON'T WE? NOOOOOOOO.
Naomi: NOOOOOOO.

Em and Naomi: *get home safely*

Em and Naomi: *wake up the next morning with headaches*

Em and Naomi: "NOOOOOOOOOOOO."

And now: PICTURES.

Ironically, even though I spent a fair bit of time talking with Matt, I have pictures with everyone BUT him. So let's just imagine this photo from the 2008 show is that missing picture, except that my hair is no longer eXtremely long (Maaaan. I'd forgotten how long I grew it before I cut it for charity. That was HARD to do. I DO remember wanting to chop it all off about 1" from when I could finally donate it. But I was strong! Heh.)

Hello, Time Traveling Matt and Em from 2008!
