Skipped 2 of 2 classes today. Stellar. But for one at least, I had a legitimate reason - today was the Van Vleck Moot Court finals at my law school. The presiding judges? Chief Justice John Roberts (of the U.S. Supreme Court), Judge Guido Calabresi, and Judge Sonia Sotamayor (of the Court of Appeals for the 2nd Circuit).
Van Vleck was awesome. It was set up like a real Supreme Court case although of course the problem was fictional. I was super-impressed with all 4 of the students who argued before the court, and it was really great to be able to hear the judges questioning the students about the case. I especially enjoyed Judge Calabresi, who is sharp as a whip and funny as well. As Phil said, "I like his style."
The competition went for a couple of hours and at the end they gave out some awards for skills boards and stuff. Afterwards, there was a reception for gold ticket holders (like the moot court board members, family, professors, etc.) and then a regular reception at the law school. Jay and I managed to get into the special reception even though we only had blue tickets because we are that smooth. ;) Which means I got to meet Chief Justice Roberts very briefly and got a picture of him (although not me and him) and got to talk to Judge Calabresi (I love him!) who is really nice and took a picture with me even though I only had a camera phone. Heh. And talked briefly with Judge Sotomayor, too.
It was really great. *sigh* My inner law school geek was contented.
P.S. Also they had good cheesecake. Mmm.
