I found my 8th grade boyfriend and my best friend from 3rd to 9th grade on facebook. I was hesitant to add them, and unsure about whether or not they would even want to talk to me after I did. This was more than 2 years ago. We started talking, and both of them seemed genuinely interesting in what was going on in my life. We kept up conversation across facebook all that time, and yesterday I had dinner with them. It was the first time I'd spent time with them in person since the 9th grade.
I was so nervous, I almost made myself sick. I hoped they'd like me, and that we'd still be comfortable with each other in person, since all we'd done was talk online. I was wrong to be nervous. We had a WONDERFUL time, and have made plans to see each other the next time I'm back in Los Angeles. I would never have done it without the internet. I needed facebook to make that first step for me, to help me dip my toes in the water to see how hot or cold it was (so to speak). I may never have spoken to these people again without the web, nonetheless gone out of my way to see them. It was a truly beautiful night, and it was a nice reminder that people never change (in the best way possible). I think facebook saved our friendships.
