Last weekend Bill helped me deconstruct two raised beds and build one new taller one. I hope to keep the beagle out of this higher garden as well as I've found I enjoy the other tall garden I made this past spring. Being closer to the plants to see more helps as well as less weeds and less insects. Of course during this week as I shoveled dirt into the garden
brushette was all into that new garden. This garden is 2 feet high, 8 feet long and 2.5 feet wide framed with 2x12 untreated planks. I'm trying to be as organic as possible.
Yesterday I purchased 4 bags of topper soil. I reclaimed most of the soil from the two prior beds and incorporated some of our horses composted manure for a pick me up as well. Today I planted the new raised bed planter! I did add one 2x4 on a side that needs this bing bam ba da boom.
Planted down the center 7 broccoli, to their north 6 red cabbage, to the south some black sim lettuce and lots of Little Gem Romaine and lots more of Butter lettuce. To the east end I planted snow peas. As they grow I will add two stakes and bailing twine for them to grow up along. All of these are seedlings I started here from organic non GMO seeds as well. I had second thoughts about the lettuce in this garden because perhaps a root crop would gain more from the depth but what is done is done. I have several feed in the square foot raised bed that I can try for carrots again. First I need to mix in some manure though. The soil that was delivered wasn't particularly high test fertile. When zucchini aren't acting like an insane over productive virus something is wrong.
My tomato season was bad because of blight wiping out half my crop. Next year I think most of my tomatoes will move to the front yard into containers. My great idea of growing seedlings for sale tanked because I believe I'm before the times. Average Jane doesn't realize that these days are only going to get more difficult and to be self reliant as much as possible is the best option. Yesterday there was a vast power outage over San Diego & AZ and parts of Mexico. This is our future. I was looking at solar powered deep freezers online just yesterday. They are about $1300 but the idea that power outages won't cost me food is very enticing.
I keep dreaming of digging out my own root cellar but so far I can't find a reality place in the yard. If I can find potato starts I will attempt growing potatoes again this year. This time I will use one of my great tomato cages and just keep piling up the hay and dirt as the plant grows. I was also looking at growing crops in hay bales as another idea. It would just be messy with the bales flaking off all over.
