OWC Musical AIDA Features Local Talent , Tickets on Sale Now
With about month until show time, local performers are eagerly rehearsing scenes from AIDA, this summer's large-scale musical production that will be presented July 12 to 15 on the main stage of The Arts Center at Okaloosa-Walton College. Theater students and seasoned community actors come together every year for this highly anticipated community event.

AIDA tells the story of a forbidden love between an Egyptian soldier and an enslaved princess who come from two warring nations. The Elton John and Tim Rice musical features a contemporary pop/rock score and will be presented in its original Broadway version by a cast of 40 performers and 33 musicians and singers.

Niceville residents, Daryck Monroe, Tim Norton and Erin Carloni, share their enthusiasm about the production.

With an obvious presence on stage, Monroe found AIDA as a way to get back into his love of acting. The 26-year-old is a veteran OWC performer who is back in Niceville after a performance career in the New York area. Monroe loves performing and said "It makes me whole."

Norton, a member of the OWC Show Choir and Madrigals, explained the cast's intense rehearsal schedule. He said that they start out with about three-hour rehearsals and work up to about six hours. "We start with a basic sketch and add in more as the play gets more complicated," said Norton of the progression of rehearsals. Norton, an OWC Fine Arts scholarship student, made his OWC stage debut in Annie Get Your Gun last year. He plans to transfer to University of Florida or Stetson University and pursue his Ph.D. in mathematics.

"At the last minute I decided to do this and try out. I was shocked when I ended up getting one of the lead roles," said Carloni. The voice scholarship recipient is pursuing her Associate of Arts degree at OWC and plans to transfer to the University of Mobile to study music and business. Carloni, who is also an OWC Show Choir and Madrigals singer, is making her OWC mainstage debut in AIDA.

AIDA was originally presented on Broadway as a Disney Theatricals venture. The show earned five Tony nominations and won Best Original Score. An all-star album featuring songs from the musical was released in 1999 with the song "Written in the Stars", performed by Elton John and Lee Ann Rimes, becoming a hit on the Billboard charts. OWC has produced large-scale musicals on the main stage of The Arts Center every year since 1997 to rave community reviews.

Tickets for the show are available by calling the box office at 729-6000 or online at The Arts Center web site at www.owc.edu/arts for $20 adults and $15 for youth age 18 and younger. Current OWC students may obtain complimentary tickets with a student ID.
