I am going to start taking a college level 1 course for French in January. I'd like to get a head start on learning so I don't struggle later on.

Looking for recommendations for beginner books, cd, or dvds. Also where can I find either children books to buy or read via ebook.

I don't have any recommendations specific to French, but livemocha.com might be a good way to just get that head start, at least - you'll learn basic vocabulary and sentences, you get feedback from native speakers, and it's free!

Agreed! I'm learning French on LiveMocha and for the most part it's pretty good for a beginner. My main complaint is that on the writing section, they'll ask you to write things such as, "The truck is not red, it is green," without teaching you how to say, "it is" first. Stuff like that.
