...seen the anxiety every high school kid feels growing up on the Kansas plain.
I'm currently writing this from I-40 in west central Oklahoma (we just passed exit 53).
After a brief inspection of the damage to the roof of the Comfort Inn, we left Hays this morning bound for Dodge City and points southward, as another potentially explosive day was in the works. We were headed towards Perryton, TX when an explosively developing supercell caught our eyes. We followed a tremendous rotating wall cloud for about one to two hours, breaking off of it after the storm began to completely fall apart. A second wall cloud was observed for about half an hour (along with the 1-2 inch hailstones lying on the ground), before the decision was made to set off for the beast sitting south of Perryton. My first time setting foot on Texas soil brought us a terrific high precipitation supercell, reminiscent in appearance, if not in strength, to the Hallam, NE beast of 22 May 2004.
The unfortunate part of the day was my digestive system deciding that today was a good day to toy with me. Fortunately, that appears to have calmed slightly, and tomorrow (and perhaps the next day) appears to be an opportunity for a down day and some relaxation.
So, to sum up...three supercells, three rapidly rotating wall clouds, a few funnels here and there, one VERY suspicious lowering in the northeast Texas panhandle.
Not a bad follow-up to yesterday's jaunt.
(I've been waiting for a chance to use this lyric as a subject line ever since I heard the song for the first time last summer. It would make a great chase song if I had remembered to add it to the CD.)
