Election Ramblings

The Tories are known for having really ridiculous ads, going so far as to present a faux film trailer about the Prime Minister and, best of all, focusing on an iPod tax (straws, much?). Otherwise, their main complaint is that Ignatieff dared to take teaching positions in the United States, which clearly means he's out-of-touch with Canada. He also worked in the UK, but that doesn't count. Whatever, I'm not a Grit, I don't care.

What I do care about: Stephen Harper is currently running an ad where a woman sits on her chesterfield and raves about how awesome Harper's GST cut was. Fair enough, lower taxes are awesome.

She then goes on to bitch about promises made by the Grits and the NDP, and hints at the GST being raised to fund these promises.

What I want to know is, how is Harper going to fulfill his? This ad implies that Harper lowered taxes in the name of funding absolutely nothing. 1% off the GST didn't change my life. It was lovely, yes, but if I'd rather pay 6% GST and gain a range of benefits than pay 5% for the sake of paying 5%. So long as Saskatchewan doesn't buy in to HST, I'm happy going back to paying 7% if it helps in the long run.

Ugh my God, this election, what the fuck.

I voted a few weeks ago to get it out of my hair. The 2008 federal election showed the lowest voter turn-out in history. I keep hearing people saying they don't vote and don't complain, therefore it's all right. It scares the fuck out of me that we've become so passive about this country. Even if you don't complain, you still live here, and it's a big fuck you when you don't even consider voting. If there's any social issue that strikes you, voting can make a difference. Hearing people older than me who I look up to say that voting isn't important to them is so disheartening. These people have children, but be damned if they're going to encourage them to vote.

Even if just once you thought to yourself, 'man, Harper is a quack,' vote. Hell, vote for the Tories, I don't care, just do it so I don't feel like the only one who gives a rip anymore. If you've ever felt patriotic on Canada Day, vote. To vote is to be a Canadian citizen, and if you don't give a shit about Parliament, then you surely don't give a shit about Canada.

Canada is such a joke. I don't know why people are so eager to live here. We're a social disaster and it fucking blows. There is nothing to be proud of.

election, canada
