[ CHARACTER INFORMATION ]
Name: (Doctor) You Haibara
Age: 27
Gender: male
Fandom: Fatal Frame IV; Mask of the Lunar Eclipse
Timeline: Post death, and post game
History: fatal frame wiki &character wiki

Character Personality: You Haibara's life has been largely, almost entirely shaped by Luna Sedata Syndrome- an incurable mental illness that slowly drives those afflicted mad, and of those suffering from the disease, many commit suicide. Haibara and his sister Sakuya we raised almost entirely by their father, a doctor working studiously to find a cure for their mother, and the siblings lived in relative isolation on the removed Rougetsu Island. Most of their time was spent in and around Haibara Hospital- the facility of which their father was the director, and the one from which their mother would later jump to her death.

The loss caused something of a mental break in their father, and he plunges even further into his work after her death- leaving You and Sakuya with only themselves as company. It's then that Haibara developed an obsession of his own- with his sister. Half desperate not to lose the remains of his family, and having grown with only Sakuya for every possible companionship, the two began a love affair. The romance however, isn't the be all end all for Haibara, and as he'd long since decided to follow in his father's footsteps, he began to study medicine as well. "Medicine" would probably be a more apt description. While not explicitly stated, several years later while away in Tokyo, he had opened his own practice, one that lead to the deaths of several patients. When the police came looking for him, Haibara retreated to the place he would be safest. Back on Rougetsu Island, and hidden from outsiders by his father, Haibara began living in the hospital and "assisting"(conducting side by side) in many "treatments"(seriously messed up torture sessions) for their patients suffering from Luna Sedata. It's then that he learned Sakuya too was now suffering from the syndrome- as was their incestuous child Ayako. He began researching a cure with renewed vigor, going so far as to research and reconstruct an ancient island ritual that was said to be capable of healing all those with the syndrome. Granted, it involved the kidnapping of five girls, some masks made out of dead people's faces, his sister doing a creepy dance, and stealing a bunch of ancient family-owned music and books, but it was done. For science. The ritual failed and Sakuya entered a 2 year coma in which Haibara hovered almost exclusively in her wing, insisting that his sister would one day awaken. And she did! Only to walk through the island and pretty much result in the death of everyone she looked at. Haibara ran to the roof to take a good look, but bumped into the detective who'd been tailing him for the better part of five years. It was a narrow, and brief escape and one that ended in his stabbing the detective- but as the officer died, he pulled them both off the roof of the hospital and the not so good doctor finally met his end.

Now, I stated previously that his personality is largely shaped by the syndrome because I believe it holds true in every possible way. As a child, his role model was a father so completely engrossed in finding a cure to the disease that he was willing to sacrifice whoever was necessary in order to meet that end. Be it nature or nurture, Haibara grew up to be more of the same. He treats his patients with a polite, but ultimately flat demeanor- often repeating the same "you'll be better in no time" with little to no inflection to each of his rapidly deteriorating patients. He and his father frequently consult in a room that looks especially designed for lobotomies (or something frighteningly similar), standing over their patients and conversing easily while they scream for fear and pain beneath them. While his father appears to ignore them because he's disinterested in them, Haibara himself carries the impression that he ignores them because they aren't human to begin with. In many ways, his patients are treated like objects, regarded as a means to an end instead of individuals capable of suffering- and this sentiment extends to the elderly and to children alike.

The only exception we see is his sister and his daughter. Sakuya, who becomes increasingly more unstable as the years progress, is slowly being built into a ward of isolation- where only her father and brother are permitted to see her until she at last loses her mind completely. It's worth noting however, that she is the icon of his ambition, but not the ambition itself. His obsession with Luna Sedata is something he inherited at a young age, and his quest to save his sister is the holy grail of that goal. His desire to save her the way his father was unable to save their mother.

Ayako on the other hand, is often described by their father a mirror of Haibara himself. Decidedly disturbing when we often see the girl dragging nurses down the hall by their hair, cutting off the head of another patient's pet bird, and shoving children down the stairs. She's a visual of the cruelty we only catch glimpses of in Haibara, and one that we see him interact with as well. He treats Ayako's antics the way one would treat a child who has taken a cookie from the cookie jar- which is to say, he empathizes with her, and encourages her to do as she likes because having "fun" is the most important thing they can do.

Haibara is as calculating as he is completely obsessed, and able to use his good looks and charisma to charm his way into relationships with others- only to disregard the facade completely when it's no longer necessary. He's also keenly aware of his abilities to get around other people- the quintessential iron fist in a velvet glove. He has no qualms about manipulating whoever he may need to in order to achieve his ends, and is as comfortable evading the police for the better part of five years as he is dumping "failed experiments" into the basement. Ultimately, Haibara is a damaged man who has made a living exactly the way he was taught to, and though he speaks about an ideal, peaceful life with his sister and Ayako, it's incredibly hard to imagine his version of contentment.

Character Abilities: Haibara is, really just your run of the mill human being. He's seen to be in good health and decent enough shape to run through a hospital while being pursued. He's also graduated from medical school and works as a physician at his father's hospital, so medical knowledge and understanding is something he'll be bringing with him to Death City.

Beyond this, his greatest assets are likely his unique combination of charisma and intellect. Through his charisma he was able to have a hand in the death of three of his patients, move to a relatively isolated island, and then continue to practice medicine with absolutely no suspicion from his new patients. He carries himself with confidence, and it's that same confidence that makes him such a capable liar. He has no exaggerated sense of his own capabilities and thus is able to plan lies around them, a sort of cosmetic surgery for his personality. Haibara has shown himself capable of living in the public eye, while under the shadow of suspected criminal charges, without damaging his reputation just as he's proved himself capable of out witting the police who attempted to prove his guilt.

Character Weaknesses: Haibara is cray cray. No really, the guy is insane, though in an entirely separate way than his mother and sister ever were. Though he and his father never suffered the effects of Luna Sedata Syndrome themselves, their lives were hugely dictated by the disease, and Haibara junior took an especially creepy turn. Obsessed with finding a cure, he's proven himself willing to risk prison for the sake of his experimentation, and after things got a little heated in his Tokyo office and he fled to Rougetsu Island, the guy started living in the hospital. He then confined his sister to an isolated ward, and their child was kept in a room attached to his own.

The desperation to keep his family essentially a secret is likely just as much due to his inability to give up the disease as it is a reflection of the emotional damage he faced as a child. Having witnessed his mother's suicide as a result of the syndrome, Haibara refuses to let Sakuya or Ayako too far from reach. His father's silent acceptance of this activity and encouragement to perform even more horrifying experiments are perhaps best summed up when he refers to Haibara and Ayako's sadistic treatment of others as "excessive mischief." While one could argue that Haibara has been groomed to become the man he became, and was simply a victim of circumstance, it's clear that regardless of reason, the man is a sociopath. He is the epitome of a control freak, and allows for no variables to interfere in his delicately balanced personal life. It's nothing short of an obsession, and ultimately proves that you really don't need Luna Sedata Syndrome to go mad.
