Character History: Ages ago there was a single world where gods dwelt called Devaloka that had been created by the Primeval Giant. All that remained of him was a thing known as the Manifest that had the power to grant any wish if one knew how to use it correctly. Devaloka had been peaceful until some gods started to commit evil deeds. Other gods would not stand for this and split the world into two, the other world, Naraka, being where the evil gods were banished to. Their powers were stripped and they were called humans. There were those that opposed this decision to split the worlds. This group was known as The Sensus, led by a powerful god named Asura. Opposing him were those that wished for the two worlds to remain separate. These were The Ratio. Among them was a brilliant tactician named Orifiel. He was the teacher of one of the Divine Pillars of The Ratio, known as Himmel, who was also imprisoned by The Ratio. One day during a battle, Asura had cornered him. Little known to the god was that Orifiel purposely allowed himself to be captured as it meant that his objective could be completed, that objective being the evacuation of city not on Asura's maps. When Asura learned of this, he spared Orifiel's life. Over time, these two would meet several times on the battlefield, eventually developing a hidden alliance. Orifiel and Himmel both agreed that The Ratio were straying from their objectives. After a brief debate between the two, it was decided that they would join Asura. This would have a dire consequence. After The Sensus gained victory over The Ratio, Himmel was killed for Orifiel's betrayal. Not long after that, an even greater tragedy struck: the goddess Inanna, Asura's lover, betrayed him and stabbed him with his own blade, Durandal while Asura snapped the blade and then stabbed her. This inadvertently activated The Manifest and destroyed Naraka. Or so it was believed. In actuality, Devaloka and Naraka merged together but simply did not connect. This event came to be known as The Fall.
Now fast forward to the present day. The capital city of Regnum is at war with the northern city of Tenos as well as a western city called Garam. Following The Fall, the church had lost a majority of its power. More and more individuals with fearsome powers were arising. These beings were known as Avatars and were all gods, also known as Devas, in their previous lives, though this fact was not know to the majority of the population. Due to the uneasiness these horrifying beings were causing, the Compulsatory Avatar Rehabilitation Program was created in order to capture them. Another organization called Arca was also created to help these Avatars and make sure they have a place in society. The leader of this group was called Lady Mathias, who sought to find The Manifest. Those that did not join Arca but had been captured by the Compulsatory Avatar Rehabilitation Program had their skills tested and then put on the battlefield.
Ange was not so fortunate, however. When she used her powers to stop a group of thieves who entered The Holy Cathedral in Naos, accidentally destroyed it while defending it, the mayor turned her over to the Avatar Rehabilitation Program. She was taken to the Naos Base. There she was put inside a tube to be used as power device for a machine known as a Gigantess. Had she been less fortunate, the rest of her life could've been spent inside that test tube. Thankfully for her, a group of avatars manages to save her. The three were actually searching for her. These individuals are Ruca Milda, Iria Animi, and Spada Belforma or formerly Asura, Durandal, and Inanna. On the way out, there happens to be some unexpected trouble in the form of Ricardo, a mercenary who'd run into the other three earlier. He's also come for Ange on behalf of a client from Tenos named Albert. Before a fight could break out, Ange steps in to pay Ricardo so he'd drop his client and become her bodyguard instead. Given just how valuable the jewel he receives as payment is, Ricardo agrees and goes with them.
Up next they go to Regnum to find more avatars. The hunt is successful as they come across a girl named Hermana, who turns out to be the reincarnation of Vrtra. This is uncovered during a mushroom hunt in some cavern in the sewers. Down there they find a Memory Circle, which is a crystallized memory of Devaloka, and allows them to see memories from Devaloka. This one showed them one with Asura gaining victory over the Ratio while riding Vrtra. In it, Orifiel also comes and reveals to Asura that Himmel had been murdered. It is especially devastating as Orifiel had joined the Sensus in order to save Himmel. The news does not change Orifiel's mind about following Asura, however. He will still be on his side as both Asura and Himmel shared the same ideals. Back to the present, Ange is clearly troubled following the memory, muttering Himmel's name under her breath. On the way out, they run into one of Mathias' helpers, a young boy with two dogs named Chien. He used to be the guardian of The Manifest, Cerberus, and is now searching for it for Mathias. After a brief struggle, the group leaves with a fifth member, namely Hermana. Seeing as how many people want the Manifest, it's decided that they go back to Naos and search for information on Memory Circles in the cathedral in order to gain more knowledge about The Manifest.
Once the search is over, they discover that there's 4 possible places that Memory Circles could be: Ashihara, Garam, Galpos, and Tenos. So off to those four places they go. In Ashihara, it's revealed that Mathias is the Overlord, who Ruca believes used The Manifest to destroy Devaloka. Ruca and everyone else don't remember that Asura was actually the Overlord, but it will be revealed later. They also learn from another of Mathias' subordinates that Inanna and not the Overlord brought the downfall of Devaloka. Next up is the city of Garam where they get to go inside a volcano to stop a psychopath with the worst speaking pattern ever. This guy, Hasta, turns out to be an evil scythe named Gaelbolg who Durandal was supposed to kill. He's not all bad as he kindly activates the Memory Circle for the party, which is a quick scene of Asura and Durandal fighting Gaelbolg. Then Hasta slices open Ruca, the party worries like crazy for a couple days, Spada hugs the hell out of him when he wakes up while Ange scolds Spada for it, and then it's finally off to Galpos. There everyone runs into Chien and his pups again. But first, Memory Circle time. This one is of Orifiel and Asura discussing how to use the Manifest and how the Ratio and Sensus either had their own interpretation of how to use it, namely that it did not require the sacrifice of the person one cares for most but simply two people who fully understood and trusted the other. Chien demands for them to tell him how to use it. Instead of being aggressive towards him, Ange wishes to give him a hug due to how tragic his past has been. Earlier they'd learned how the boy had been shunned from his own village and the party felt terrible for him. Of course, this doesn't go well, they fight, he runs.
So this leaves us with one final destination: Tenos. Unfortunately, due to the war, it is necessary to go all the way back to Regnum in order to get to Tenos. There Ricardo betrays the party, they get taken to Grigori Island, and then on a boat where they almost get their brains messed with. Ricardo saves them before that could happen. He explains that one of Arca, Gardel, was his brother in the past and he wanted to help him. It was when Gardel went against his promise not to harm the party that Ricardo realized that he was not the same as he was before. Speak of the devil, that's when Gardel attacks the boat. Then one of the Rehabilitation soldiers attack in a Gigantess and kills him. Once the battle with the Gigantess is over, the party gets to Mamut. From there, they have to go through Lemures Marsh and then through the Northern Battlefield to get to Tenos.
The marsh seems to be peaceful at first, but that does not last too long. Soon after entering, undead soldiers attack the party. Yes, zombies. This phenomenon appears to be a result of The Fall. Near the exit, a strange monster pops up. The creature is capable of gathering souls. It's revealed that the thing is actually Ratio souls who had no place to go after the fall. Ange approaches it, telling the soldiers that they fought well and have earned peace, thus releasing them. A flashback follows for Ange. Himmel had been confined due to Orifiel so the tactician devoted himself to Himmel's salvation. Both of them agree that The Ratio have strayed from the right path, which is why Orifiel wants to side with Asura, but Himmel forbids it since that would cause Orifiel to branded a traitor. Orifiel goes on to say that he will will save Himmel with the aid of Asura. Himmel gives in, saying that he will wait as he knows that Orifiel will never betray him. Then it's off to the second dungeon, the Northern Battlefield. There Iria has a memory and the party runs into Hasta. Once that's over with, Tenos is just ahead.
In the city, it's discovered that Albert's unit headed to some ruins in the east known as The Celestial Garden. So that's the next destination. Once there, they ponder why exactly Albert is looking for both Ange and The Manifest. Soon after, Ange has a memory of Himmel and Orifiel in which the two talk about Ratio, Sensus, and Naraka. Himmel says that he will wait forever for Orifiel. Afterward, Ange mutters Himmel under her breath, clearly being a bit distressed by the memory. Deeper in the dungeon, there's a Memory Circle, which is of The Overlord giving a speech. That's when Hermana remembers The Sky Castle, Asura's headquarters, and that it didn't fall with the rest of Devaloka meaning it still should be there along with The Manifest. Before anything could be planned out, soldiers arrive. More importantly, Albert finally makes his appearance and reveals to Ange that he was Himmel. Without any struggle, Ange goes along with him. Naturally, the party won't just let Ange go like that especially without any explanation, so they chase after her to the military headquarters in Tenos, The Tenos Munitions Factory. There Albert is explaining to Ange that he wishes for her to help him retrieve The Manifest, but their conversation is interrupted by Ange's friends barging in. Albert says that he is not with Mathias. Unlike her, he wants to cast aside both the Sensus and Naraka to create a land for Ratio only. For this, he requires both Ange and The Manifest. A quick flashback occurs of Orifiel and Asura talking about Manifest interpretation. In order to use it, the user must sacrifice the one that they love most. Asura says that he cannot kill Inanna. From this memory, it's fairly obvious that Albert wants to apparently kill Ange, which the group definitely will not allow so they try to stop him. Ange gets in-between them, telling them that she cannot allow them to hurt Albert. So following a boss battle between the two, Ange pleads for the party not to hurt him since she couldn't protect him in a past life. She tells them that she believes that Albert could change, so she turns to him and tells him that he can't be shackled by what happened in his past life. Unlike Himmel, she goes on to say, he not only has freedom but power and that power he can make work for him. Naraka can be saved by him without having to sacrifice lives. It's then that Albert remembers how Orifiel used to spank him for misbehaving in the past, how he was the only one that would stand up to Himmel regardless of their difference in status. Albert decides that there are things he has to do before falling into despair. Before things could get wrapped up all happy like, Mathias shows up. She says that she'll get to The Sky Castle first before disappearing. In order to get there, they have to fly so Albert allows them to borrow his airship.
Ricardo pilots them up to the Sky Castle. Here is where the final major reveals occur. Not only does the party see Asura's, Inanna's, and Durandal's calcified corpses standing in the same position as they did when they killed each other, but Mathias reveals both that she is forever cursed to look like Inanna and that she is also Asura. She is the hatred part of his soul while Ruca is the guilt. Before Mathias can use The Manifest for her real plan, to destroy the world, Ruca goes berserk and destroys The Sky Castle instead. Everyone manages to survive that; Mathias and Chitose escape, the party minus Ruca manage to get back on the airship, and Ruca is saved by Chien. Ruca and Chien go to Sania Village, Iria's home town, where the party regroups. There it's decided that they would go to Arca's headquarters to stop Mathias.
On the way to the airship, Hermana remembers a fun little detail: Devaloka was never destroyed, it just reunited with Naraka. Vrtra had seen souls and all the power on Devaloka rain down on Naraka. It seems that The Manifest was used by Asura and Inanna had killed the other. The worlds were trying to reunite, but didn't completely since it wasn't just Asura's wish that was trying to be granted, but Inanna's wish as well, which was to keep the worlds apart. The worlds are together, but just not connected, which is why Naraka is currently such a mess.
Finally, the party arrives at Arca Headquarters: The Tower of Dawn. On the way to the top of the tower, they run into Hasta and then Oswald, defeating both. Distractions out of the way, the group reaches the top where Mathias and Chitose await. Mathias is killed while Chitose stabs herself so she'd be with Mathias. Then Ruca and whoever has the highest friendship with him go use The Manifest to reunite the two worlds. With that finally done and over with, it's back to Regnum where everyone heads their separate ways. Ange says she wants to rebuild the cathedral in Naos seeing as it was her own doing that the building had been destroyed. There is a problem with this as she would require a patron in order to be able to reconstruct it. That's when Albert happens to come by. He not only says he'll be her patron but also asks her to come to Tenos with him. This proposal Ange accepts far too happily and goes back with him to Tenos, leaving the rest of the party to say their goodbyes.
Personality:
Upon first glancing at Ange, one might simply brush her off as being nothing more than a member of the clergy. Not that this is untrue in any way, mind you. She will preach your head off if given half a chance or at the very least inform you about the church, which is what she does numerous times throughout the game. These lectures could range from her simply telling a person to pray or they could be full out speeches from hell, which usually occur if there's a lot to be explained or if someone accidentally implies that she's fat. In addition to preaching, she also prefers upholding the positive aspects of the church rather than the negative. It isn't that she does not acknowledge the church's short comings, but rather that she dislikes it when all someone can say about it is the negativity, something which Ricardo does and for which she scolds him for. So yes, Ange is clearly a religious individual, but there so many other aspects to her personality.
Following her the religious part of her personality, the next one that clearly sticks out is how knowledgeable the woman is. Out of the entire party, she appears to know the most about various topics. For example, when they're about to board a boat for the first time, it is Ange who explains how a boat works to Hermana, or later in Ashihara, it's she that informs Ruca and Iria about what exactly kabuki is. Adding to her knowledge is her keen sense of observation of things, whether it be of the environment, situation, or a person. When the party returns to The Naos Cathedral to look at the library, Ange instantly notices that the passage had been used recently. Then when Ricardo says it might be a trap, Ange argues that it could not be possible since no one was aware that they were coming there. A bit later after their search, the one who calls Ricardo out on having taken a nap instead of searching and noticed the teeny bit of drool on Hermana's face that implied she had done the same was Ange. When it comes to people, she is equally observative. During a conversation, Ange muses about Iria's character and entire purpose in the group. Another aspect of her intelligent side is how wonderful of a tactician she can be. This might have something to do with her past life having been known as a brilliant tactician, though she is equally brilliant. During the second encounter with Ricardo at Naos Base, it appeared as though a battle would break out when Ange would not go along with him. Instead of going with him or permitting violence to occur, she offers a compromise. She gives him an extremely valuable church treasure in return for him nulling his other contract and becoming her bodyguard instead. Another example of this would be during searching the cathedral library. Hermana, Iria, and Spada attempt to weasel their way out of looking by saying that they can't read (Hermana), they're incapable of lifting anything heavier than a fork and knife (Iria), or that they don't do books (Spada). Instead of allowing them to sit it out, Ange outsmarts them by pairing them up with someone who can do what they can't so that in the end they do have to do their fair share of the work.
Kindness is also a major component of her personality. Ange is a truly good person. She offers to give Hermana hugs whenever she needs them and offers to give Chien a hug as well after learning of the poor boy's history. Several times when Ruca is being picked on by certain nameless individuals, Ange comes to his rescue, even giving him a handkerchief to wipe his nose before running off to scold them. Ange becomes worried when Iria's headaches begin and even asks if she would like to rest her head in her lap. That's another part to her: she worries about the people she cares for. A clear example of this would be following the incident with Hasta having nearly killed Ruca. Once he wakes up, Ange frets over him. She scolds Spada for hugging an injured Ruca and proceeds to worry over the injured boy. She is also a very peaceful person. If the Ricardo incident wasn't enough of an example, another would be when the party has to exterminate Armaboars. Even though they're monsters, she still feels terrible for having to slaughter them like that. Even her past life was as much of a nonviolent type as she. The man purposely used his soldiers as a distraction and allowed himself to be nearly captured by Asura all to help save people in a village not on Asura's maps from becoming involved in the fighting.
As much of a stiff as this might make her out to be, Ange really isn't. She certainly does have a sense of humor, though it is a bit more twisted than most people's. One joke she makes is when Ricardo is telling Iria that none of them resemble their past lives, adding in unless she believes that Ange really is a man. At that Ange smiles and says that she's impressed that they noticed. This causes them to both back away from her while she explains that she had been merely joking. Her sense of humor comes out again when she's speaking with Spada. He'd mentioned having thought she'd be a stiff, thick-headed woman. Ange in return explains that the Holy Maiden is just a title and anyone could be one, even an evil, voluptuous woman. Spada far too eagerly asks if she's like that. A smile crosses her lips as she replies that maybe she is, before quickly adding that most holy maidens wouldn't joke like that. Spada asks which was joke and she states it's the part he was most excited about. Ange's twisted sense of humor is sometimes used in a more threatening manner. Spada continued to be nothing short of a pervert to her. When it was apparent that he would not stop, Ange threatened to make sure to put “here lies a pervert” on his headstone if he did not cut it out. Would she have actually done that? Most wouldn't really want to try and find out. That's another aspect to her; as sweet as she seems, Ange can be nothing short of the most terrifying beast in existence. Whether it be because of her scolding or her lectures or her threats, people are frightened by her. This amplifies tenfold if you happen to call her fat or tell her she needs to go on a diet. If you do, you'd better start praying since something will happen.
Not all of her traits are positive, however. Due to her observational skills, some might call her manipulative. She can figure out things about a person and use them to her advantage. When Iria mocks Ruca for having been seasick, Ange instantly scolds her for saying that when she had been no better herself. Another incident would be when Ricardo refused to go search for the mushroom. Ange simply turned to him and asked if he needed to be reminded as to who his employer was for him to come along. During a skit in which Ruca refuses to look her in the eye, Ange inquires if her face is so strange that Ruca cannot bring himself to look at it. Of course, Ruca instantly looks at her when as he denies that, having done exactly what Ange wanted him to do. Adding to the negativity would be how skillfully she can lie. While she hates lying, she manages to do it fairly well along with making up excuses. One of her sayings is that “Heaven sometimes looks away”. She is also very adept at hiding her emotions or forcing fake ones. At one point she even comments how she had trained herself to force a smile. When Ricardo had betrayed the party, although Ange kept believing in him, her reason for that was because someone had to believe in him and not because she fully did. In Tenos while she is being troubled by her emotions, Ruca tries to ask her what's wrong. Most might reveal what had been troubling them, but not her. Instead, the reason for her depressing mood had been that she needed new clothing. The only things that people will know about her is what she allows them to. If they ask something that she doesn't want to share, tiptoeing around it comes very easily to her.
Even the holiest of people have negative flaws and Ange is certainly no different, however, all those flaws make her more interesting and the good truly outweighs the bad in her case.
Extra:
Character Abilities: Like all Avatars, Ange is capable of performing techniques known as Devic Artes, which range from simple attacking to healing to even stealing in her case. While she is not good at physical activities and openly hates them, there are other qualities that make up for her dislike of those. She is a good tactician and able to think on her toes. Good leadership ability is another of her strengths, demonstrated even further in Tales of the World: Radiant Mythology 3 in which she is the leader of a guild. Ange also possesses a wide range of knowledge in several subjects, especially when it comes to the church or world history. Being a kind and very caring individual is another of her abilities. If someone appears as though they are in need of assistance or of a hug, Ange will happily offer her services, especially with the latter of the two.
Possessions: Ange will have her usual weapon on her, which is a dagger. As mentioned in a skit, she carries around handkerchiefs on her person so there will be several of those with her. The necklace that she wears around her neck, a fake replica of a church treasure, will also be with her. Finally, she will have a few gels and healing items but not too many.
Anything else: Nope.
Samples:
Action/Communication thread/post sample: My, I do hope that this contraption works. Hello, I am Ange Serena. I have just recently arrived here and it is a pleasure to meet all of you.
The locals certainly are unfriendly, are they not? Would anyone have any knowledge as to why their behavior had been so unwelcoming? I do not recall having done anything particularly rude or vulgar upon arrival. [she pauses] At least, I certainly hope I had not.
Also, would anyone be so kind as to escort me to my residence? I am afraid that I might become more lost than I presently am should I attempt such an endeavor without assistance.
Log/Prose sample: This world was certainly an interesting one. All the different areas and people here made it very different from Naraka or even Devaloka. A smile rested on Ange's lips as she continued in her exploration. It was all so fascinating.
Buildings and buildings, people wandering in and out. Peacefulness seemed to radiate from everywhere. Were it not for the locals' attitudes towards individuals like her, this place might have been a virtual utopia. She briefly wondered if there was a religion that was practiced here. Perhaps there might be details of it in the library. If they even possessed a library. Certainly there must be a place where their literature is kept. Once she completed her exploration she would have to ask about that.
Everything appeared heavenly. But all was not as it wonderful as it appeared for a hidden terror lurked in the shadows. As the priestess continued onward, something caught her eye. Something too terrible for words. Instantly her movement ceased and she stiffened at the sight of the monstrous creature in her path. No, why must this creature exist in this world as well?
The little, brown puppy in front of her gazed up at the woman, cocking its head a little. Any normal individual would've melted at the adorable way it was staring with those big, blue puppy eyes.
But not Ange, oh no. Fear captured her entirely. After a moment, she gathered up her courage. These beasts can smell fear and this one would probably attack her the moment that scent reached its nostrils. Perhaps if she did not move then it would leave her be.
However, the puppy seemed to think that the girl would make the best playmate. It yelped and began running towards her hoping to play.
The reaction was instantaneous. A loud shriek echoed throughout the area and the puppy was left to stare in confusion at the girl bolting in the opposite direction. Some people might've caught sight of a blue blur running past them, possibly close to tears. That beast had just nearly attacked her. Why oh why did this place have to have dogs?
