I'm back from another week in the desert. As always, it was an amazing experience but also very difficult. Last year it was hard because I was unprepared food, weather, everything else-wise. This year I was prepared for the food and weather (it only took 2 days to acclimate! yay!) but unfortunately my campmates didn't work out so well. What was amusing that the one person I was sure I would have issues with turned out to be my savior there. We spent our nights avoiding the crazy and giggling like mad when we could make our escape. Sadly, escape was not always possible.
Having a trailer out there was amazing! We had the door pointed the right direction so that it stayed cool until about 11am, and then we had battery-operated fans to cool us during late afternoon nap time (a must to keep going through the night). Because our trailer is older and really needs to be stored during the winter in a covered area, we've decided to sell it. We love it but it's not the right trailer for us. We'll be getting the money we put back into it and with that money I'll be able to rent a teardrop trailer for next year. I'm hoping I can even tow it with my station wagon, which would be super sweet.
Memories and thoughts on the 2011 Burn:
-Those were a DAMN lot of fireworks they used before they burned the man and I enjoyed every minute of it!
-El Pulpo Mechanico was the most amazing art car I've ever seen.
-The French Quarter was a big letdown but the Cube? The Cube was amazing.
-Don't let others Burning Man trips affect your own. Take your time and take your space. The adventure is yours.
-I don't really enjoy going to listen to DJs out in the desert. Standing in a mob of people to stare up at someone I could see in a much smaller venue is not a good use of my time. Biking around to the various art installations? DEFINITELY worth my time!
-This year's random bar music was a lot less dubstep and a lot more my style. That was awesome.
-I LOVE WORKING AT THE POST OFFICE! If I hadn't waited until Friday to volunteer, I would have volunteered every freaking day.
-Working as a barista at Center Camp was okay. My shift was a slow one and my cashier was the same. People make all the difference.
-Force yourself to get out and do things during the day. Stop at every other bar and get ice, shots, drinks, or a sno-cone.
-This year people were ridiculous stupidly aggressive about their territory. It was ridiculous what you had to go through to get a spot and yet we were still located on 8 and Birthday? How did I do that you might ask? By being a complete bitch! Believe me, that woman deserved it.
-I still haven't found the perfect shoes for the desert but I will this year. I WILL, DAMMIT!
-I won't be leaving until Tuesday. I've done my week-long adventure two years in a row now. 5 days is PLENTY.
-Bikes are amazing, bikes with a basket and a rack for carrying ice are even MORE amazing.
-It's about the fun. Do what you want to have that fun, even if that means going to bed before everyone else so you can get up to see the sunrise.
