"Ehloh.. shaotueh.. sehinwqa.. oili/

sail-aimeliah... aoder... saoei..."

"Singing." Hotaru's small hand cups her chin, propped up on her elbow. She's gazing out the window. She gazes over Autumn leaves, towards the lake, hidden by trees.

"What is that, Hotaruchan?" a question from the girl in the room.

There is a long silence. Hotaru turns around and meets the girl's eyes with her own, empty - full of life -
"I hear... singing -"

"Hotaruchan!" the girl pushes Hotaru in the shoulder with a playful laugh. Hotaru's own gaze looks away slowly. "Don't say things like that!" the girl chides. "You give me the shivers when you start talking that way."

"But I heard it..."

"Let's go down to the forest!" the small girl stands up, pulling Hotaru's pale hands in her own.

"Okay," she says.

They run downstairs, and outside. Hotaru calls over her shoulder, "Harukapapa! Michirumama! We're going out!" They slip their feet into their shoes, and lift their coats on.

"Hotaruchaaan!" the girl is already several trees into the woods. "Look at this leaf! Isn't it pretty?"

Hotaru's cheeks redden and she nods, smiling, "It is!"

It's died... it fell from it's branch.

The girl hands Hotaru the changing leaf by its stem. Red and gold and green run through it brightly, popping up where brown threatens to consume it. It's still glossy and smooth to the touch.

"Oh, a rabbit!" her friend gasps. "Bunny, come back!" She starts to run off...

"Ah..." Hotaru starts to stop her. She's already disappeared after the quick-moving bunny.

Dejected, Hotaru walks off into another direction. She twirls the stem of the leaf between her forefinger and thumb. "Who was that singing...?"

White wings...

"Mmm...?" she turns around all at once, startled.

"What was that vision..."

The sun begins to set. Back at the house, Hotaru shifts her coat off. "I'm home."

Two pairs of shoes are in the foyer, like when they left.

"I guess she went home..." she sighs softly. She takes her own shoes off, and sets them neatly by those of her parents.

"Hello...?" The house is empty... "I'm home...!!.." she calls out. No one answers.

Upstairs in bed, she stares out of the window, into the inky night.
