[ CHARACTER INFORMATION ]

Name: Katakura Koujurou
Age: 32-35
Gender: Male
Fandom: Sengoku Basara
Timeline: Season 2 of the anime, right after he defeats Hanbei

History:

…There are no good links that’ll provide info, so I’ll write up what I’ve gathered on my own from the anime and from actual historical references for the app.

Oshu is well known for its fabled One Eyed Dragon, but there is a man who has declared himself as Date Masamune’s Right Eye, and hovers just behind the other’s shoulder, like a shadow. That man is Katakura Koujurou, and he served the Date clan - and Masamune - faithfully for the entirety of his life. He is Masamune’s most skilled general, greatest samurai, best strategist, right hand man, guardian, father and brother all in one, and his brief disappearance in the second season of the anime was enough of an indicator of how he and Masamune are two halves of a whole, close in a way that no others can emulate.

Koujurou is the head of the Katakura Clan, a family of farmers and samurai whose sole purpose appears to be to serve the Masamune Clan. He once served as a junior retainer to Masamune’s father, but was later assigned to raise and guide Masamune instead. He has been at the younger man’s side ever since; it is even rumored that he is responsible for taking Masamune’s eye out, at his lord’s request.

Character Personality:

Koujurou is the sort of man who wakes up at 3 AM every day, performs his morning rituals without missing a beat, puts on a bandanna and trudges off to the fields to pick out his ingredients for breakfast, cooks said breakfast, then trades the farmer’s clothes for battle armor and the sickle for his sword in order to ride out to the battlefield. Then, once the fighting’s done, he’s going to crack out the wine bottles and pour cups for each and every one of his retainers - but only after he’s made sure his master is settled and drinking up.

Seriously. He’s the hands on, got-both-feet-planted-solidly-on-the-ground-and-a-good-head-on-my-shoulders sort of man, someone who finds no dishonor in getting his hands dirty for his people, and for the young master that he serves. The silence and propensity for action over talk, however, disguise wit that’s as sharp as a knife and an incredibly brilliant mind capable of staying at least three steps ahead of everybody else. His grade of loyalty is the scary sort of loyalty, because he’s more than just a second-in-command - he’s practically a substitute limb for the one he’s sworn fealty to. There is, after all, a reason why many call him the Right Eye of the Dragon within the Date Clan and beyond.

There is no middle ground for Koujurou: there’s no such thing as trying only so much, as getting only so far and giving up to fight another day. He’s driven, dedicated, honorable to a fault, incredibly honest, unbelievably courteous, perhaps a little too serious for his own good and so disciplined and controlled that it’s kind of scary. You want a knight in shining armor, the kind you only get in old fairy tales? Koujurou is your man, and then some. Nothing he ever does is done without a purpose, without some higher cause in mind or some impressive belief to back it up. And when he loves, he loves totally: without questions, without boundaries, and without any concept of self.

Currently, that love and devotion is singularly directed at the Date Clan, and the master he’s sworn fealty to, for life. He’s the hand that guides the clan and runs Sendai in order to allow the Dragon to fight his battles without fear of an attack from behind. Of course, outside of the Date, Sendai and the rest of Oshu, Koujurou has a very strong sense of what is right and just, and he pursues those principles to the best of his abilities, regardless of the situation.

Character Abilities:

Before anything else, Koujurou is a fighter of unrivaled prowess - he’s been trained to fight since he could walk, and is especially adept in wielding swords. His weapon of choice is the Black Dragon: a nodachi, whose length and weight do not appear to hinder him at all. He’s the type of fighter who favors counter attacks, calculated strikes and techniques that take advantage of his commendable strength and speed over anything else. Of course, he isn’t helpless without his sword, and he’s quite capable of grappling with his opponents in good, old fashioned brawls. He’s also an equestrian of notable skill, capable of fighting on horseback without any difficulty whatsoever.

Second: he’s an amazing strategist, possessing skills and insight that could have only been gained by someone who was practically born on a battlefield. He is, in fact, the better tactician between him and his master, possessing intimate knowledge of the strengths and weaknesses of any and all types of units combined with the knowledge he has gained through actual experience and the lessons he has gleaned from an almost obsessive reading of military history and philosophy.

Third: as the Right Eye of the Dragon, Koujurou possesses an intimate knowledge of the inner workings and politics of Oshu, Oshu’s immediate surroundings, and beyond that, of Hi-no-Moto as a whole. He helped his master build the Date Clan to be the remarkable military power it now is, and also handles the nitty gritty work and finer details that comes with running a bustling town like Sendai - as he is second-in-command on the battlefield, he is also the second leader of the town, as Masamune’s right hand man. Also, in the interest of aiding Masamune in gaining political clout and increasing the clan’s prosperity, Koujurou has made himself familiar with every socio-political nook and cranny of the land, along with the best means to deal with people with authority and how to get his way with anyone, from the lowliest peasant to the most arrogant mayor.

Because of his position, Koujurou has also picked up a handful of other skills to help him keep things moving - he knows, for example, how to plant crops and till fields (a good food supply makes people happy!), cook (because Masamune doesn’t have the time for it), play several musical instruments (when there are important guests in the house and no entertainers in sight…), maintain weaponry (because smithies won’t always be around) and fix war machines (desperate times call for desperate measures on the battlefield). Of course, he is something like a jack-of-all-trades but master of none outside of his three main areas of focus: sword fighting, military strategy and politics.

Character Weaknesses:

For all of his skill and his remarkable mind, Koujurou is still very much human and very, VERY capable of breaking like one. He does not possess super human strength, stamina, nor speed, and while he’s likely healthier than maybe 98% of Hi-no-Moto’s total population, that doesn’t exempt him from being vulnerable to magic or disease.

Because Koujurou practically built the place up from nothing and because he’s fought with them at his back for practically his whole life, the people of the Date Clan and the rest of Oshu are much like Koujurou’s family - the elderly are his surrogate parents, those within his age group are his siblings, and those younger than him are the children he has been charged to raise and protect. While the strategist in him views these people and the resources they provide him with as tactical assets, the man he truly is has a heart that will bleed for any loss or suffering that he may have to cause them, in pursuit of greater goals. He may also lose his cool if any threat is posed towards his comrades and loved ones on the home front.

Koujurou also has the nasty tendency to forget about himself in pursuit of his duties and his principles - that much might be evident, in how he will never show visible signs of his own discomfort in the presence of his men, or how he’s pretty much ignored any possible prospect at settling down or finding his own happiness in exchange for his total devotion to furthering the Oshu. He also has the tendency to be cold and hard-handed in acting upon what he believes must be done in order to resolve situations. He does not mind putting himself at great risk, destroying his reputation or forsaking friendships if it means protecting what he cares about.

Koujurou’s biggest and truest weakness, however, is Masamune. He has played shadow to his young master for practically the whole duration of Date’s life - Koujurou raised Masamune in place of Masamune’s real parents. Therefore, Masamune is someone who is far beyond being Koujurou’s liege lord and commander: he’s closer to a little brother, or a son, or maybe something several steps more intimate than that. As such, Koujurou is constantly on the lookout for Masamune’s welfare, measuring anything and everything that comes in even close to his master and seeing whether it’s beneficial or potentially dangerous. He has the tendency to be irrational when it comes to Masamune, and will definitely be compromised should any real danger befall his lord.

[ WEAPON SECTION ]

Why your character should be a Weapon: You would think that someone with as much skill and potential as Koujurou would be all about control, and in a manner of speaking, he is. The control he exerts, however, is always in favor of whoever he has come to recognize as his leader and master. That figure has, for the entirety of his life, been Masamune Date. Everything Koujurou has done has not been for himself, but for his lord. This is probably the principle reason why Koujurou would be a Weapon: although he has his own people and resources under his command, he has always been beholden to a power that he perceives to be greater than himself, and the decisions and welfare of that authority figure define all that he does.

What is your character's Weapon form?: the Black Dragon, the very nodachi that Koujurou himself wields. It’s a sword of exceptional craftsmanship, with a rectangular hilt of burnished gold and a pommel whose coloring and weave are the “anthithesis”, in a way, to Masamune’s Six Claws. The blade itself still bears the same inscription as the original: “For Brahma and the soaring One-Eyed Dragon”. He takes this form because it is how he envisions himself, as Right Eye to Masamune - the seventh sword at his lord’s disposal, to live or to die as Masamune sees fit. He possesses three abilities in his Weapon form: electricity, in-combat regeneration, and destructive focus.

Back in his world, Koujurou was capable of channeling an incredible amount of electricity through his body, using his weapon as his focal point. Now that he is a Weapon himself, he is able to generate electricity - he can create a charge solely on his own (he can, for example, wreathe himself in electricity), and therefore does not need to tap into an already existing source. Of course, he can only do this while he is in his Weapon form, and the amount of electricity he can generate along with the effectiveness of his elemental attacks depends on how many souls he has consumed. At the moment, attacks from Koujurou’s weapon form can cause slight nerve damage upon contact and singe flesh, and may also paralyze his targets for a brief amount of time.

Koujurou’s second ability is activated in combat with a Meister, such that attacking and/or causing wounds with Koujurou at hand heals the person wielding him at that moment. The rate of healing depends on the intensity of the offensive action that they are doing at the moment. On average, while attacking with Koujurou, a Meister can heal up small cuts, bruises and other mild forms of physical damage. Of course, the greater the injury, the longer the regeneration will take. It should also be noted that Koujurou cannot heal himself, and that the act of attacking itself is the trigger for healing. The ability does not activate while he and his Meister are at a standstill - once the Meister stops attacking, the healing stops as well. Furthermore, the healing saps energy from both Koujurou and his Meister; the former because it relies on the strength of Koujurou’s soul, and the latter because the ability, in part, uses the Meister’s own energy to speed up his natural healing rate.

Koujurou’s third ability can only be used if his Meister allows him to take control, and requires a significant amount of energy both from him and the person wielding him at the moment. If those conditions are met, Koujurou can increase the strength and attacking speed of him and his partner’s offensive actions in battle beyond the boost that naturally occurs for a partnered pair. The increase starts out at roughly ten percent the original level possessed by his Meister, and only builds up in increments as Koujurou consumes more souls - that is, for every ten souls he consumes, an additional ten percent increase is added to the boost he provides. The maximum amount, therefore, would be 110%, once he has eaten one hundred souls. It should be noted that the boost effect can only last for as long as he and his Meister can maintain it.

Koujurou is also capable of partial transformation: he can turn his left hand and lower arm into part of the blade that he is supposed to become.

[ SOUL INFORMATION ]

Soul Description: loyal, powerful, noble, intense, driven, calculating

Soul Appearance: Koujurou’s soul is moss green in color, a shade that only deepens as Koujurou’s emotions run high; when it is expanded around him, a single inscription spins at the base of the soul, framing it in a ring, spelling out “For Brahma and the soaring One-Eyed Dragon” in Sengoku Era Japanese. In times of high stress and energy, the faintest image of a dragon can be seen curling itself about his soul, in a glimmer of scales. When the face is visible, it has “hair” and a scar exactly like its own - its expression is perpetually stoic.
