Do we know John was even trying to control his rage at that point? And I say rage rather than creature deliberately, since he certainly had no idea it was a creature. And I don't mean in relation to Helen, I'm on board with him not harming her, but I don't think that's even necessarily a conscious thought to control himself around her. I'm more inclined to believe it's more instinctive, more just part of who he is, that Helen won't be physically hurt by him.

With that in mind... the show has never tried to make out that John stopped killing when the ripper murders stopped, so that last kill could have been his. But equally, I'm not sure I'm convinced we have evidence either way, even with the cheek scar.

And, if he did do it, and Past!Helen suspected it, I don't think she'd have covered it up. Thinking back to the pilot of Sanctuary, John and Helen weren't exactly on good terms, and I don't get the impression they ever really were between the time of the ripper cases and more recently. And even since the pilot, it's only comparatively good terms! If Past!Helen didn't know it, but Future!Helen did suspect, then I can see her not mentioning it. But she's had a lot longer to come to terms with who John is (and also, knows about the creature.)

I may have more thoughts later, but that's my initial reaction to the comments in here so far!

(And yeah, I love that this show can make us think about this so much, and opens up some fab discussions :-) )

You make a good point, actually. (You do that kind of a lot.) It could have been a Helen-specific thing. But it's interesting that he went from that to making the first move - with a switchblade, no less - in the alleyway fight with Future!Helen. (Not that he made that distinction.) It makes me think that the rage (to use your word, which is more relevant in this context) was so strong at that point, even his "protect Helen" instinct wasn't enough to overcome it. Which kind of makes me think that the creature (and I do mean creature in this instance) was mad. And he'd just teleported, so it would have been mad and stronger. Much badness.

UGH, YOU HAVE GIVEN ME EVEN MORE TO THINK ABOUT. CURSE YOU AND THANK YOU AT THE SAME TIME.

Yeah, like I said, I think the cover-up part is right about where my shipper instinct takes over and the theory devolves into a John/Helen feelings parade. :P

(IKR? I'm so glad I decided to post this here!)

Aww, thanks!

Good point on him making the first move with Future!Helen there. I hadn't quite connected it with that. As you say, more to think about.

And I was thinking earlier... about why Past!Helen was so intimidated, when you think back ten years and she was confronting and shooting John. Something about that seems weird. But then, in this case she was in her own house, he was physically crowding her, and she's unarmed. Not only that, the reason she's unarmed is quite possibly - and if it's true I think this may be the most important point - because Future!Helen has her weapon. We've got nothing to prove that is where Future!Helen got her gun, but after hearing the idea I've not been able to shake it.

It's certainly easy to let the shipper instinct take over! Easy and completely understandable *g*

(I'm glad you decided to post your theory here too. I love the discussions on this comm. I was pretty much off LJ for around a year, covering most of season 3, and I missed this place :-( )
