Within hours of Heath Ledger being found dead, the media was speculating he commit suicide. Last night, Britney Spears was hospitalized and initial reports indicated that she had tried to commit suicide.
With the media throwing the allegations around so liberally, one can easily forget just how serious suicide is.
Mike Emme was 17 when he took his own life, and his parents strongly believe that he did so because he just didn't know how to ask for help. His beloved yellow Mustang provided the color inspiration, and his parents pushed for something to change.
Today, the Yellow Ribbon Suicide Prevention Program distributes cards with - you guessed it! - a yellow ribbon on them. The cards reassure people that they are not alone, and if they are feeling suicidal they should present the card to someone they trust. There are also directions on the card for someone who gets handed one by a friend or family member, complete with phone numbers of suicide prevention hotlines.
Best of all, these cards are free. 10 cards and a brochure can be requested free of charge by calling the Yellow Ribbon office at 303-429-3530 and orders can be shipped to the US, Canada and Australia.
