Ah... So, I am graced with another regain. It seems that shortly after my promotion to the position of royal bodyguard, Princess Ovelia was made to live at Orbonne Monastery by her caretaker, Duke Larg. The princess had been the sole heir to the throne of Ivalice, but following the birth of Prince Orinus, her claim was hotly contested by the nobility. The move to Orbonne was for her own safety, I know this, but...
She often spoke at length to me about her desire to be free of the monastery's walls, and though it was perhaps not my place, I could not help but sympathize. Our lives in the monastery were peaceful, but lacking in purpose. While the country crumbled around us, my lady Ovelia was forced into inaction... Little wonder she occupied herself in books and studies. I myself was content to train my knights and improve my swordplay.
...But it seems we were not alone in our supposed seclusion. A mercenary named Gaff Gafgarion was employed by the Duke at my suggestion, for the increasing number of bandits in the area had set my nerves at edge. In retrospect, perhaps it was a mistake. Ser Gafgarion was a former knight during the war; despite tales of his questionable methods, I foolishly assumed him to be a trustworthy prospect. But where I expected a noble fighter, I instead found a crude and lazy lout seeking only to fatten his own purse.
At the least, his men seemed more reliable than their commander. Two in particular stick out amidst my thoughts: a young man named Rad, and another boy with blonde hair whose name escapes me. They seemed honorable enough; I only hope their swords were worth the money.
