au fic meme, part i/?

Sep 03, 2011 14:09

There's been an AU fic meme going around on Tumblr. The rules are as follows:

1) Give me a pairing.
2) Give me an AU setting.
3) I will write you a three-sentence fic.

Naturally, none of mine are actually three sentences. I've got more prompts still to fill, but here's what I've written so far:

1. Ned/Catelyn (Game of Thrones); Varys snuck him (and the girls) out of King's Landing; prompted by scandaloussteph

family, before duty and honor, 188 words

The journey to the Riverlands is long and arduous in spite of Varys’ preparations; both of his daughters remain upset - at each other, but mostly at him for whisking them away in the dark of night. In time, he hopes they can forgive him, but their travels last for many days and they are too young yet to understand. He did this for their own good, for their protection, and he would do it again no matter the cost.

When they reach the Tully stronghold, Edmure is there to gree them. Arya runs to her uncle while Sansa, his little lady, cursties and smiles. Edmure sends them inside and whispers simply, “Come, Ned. She’s waiting for you.”

He thinks of honor and duty and the task he left unfinished back at King’s Landing, but he forgets all those things when his eyes fall on his lady wife. When she looks up and cries, “Oh, Ned! The news from King’s Landing is bad. I worried I would never see you again!” he realizes that while he may have left to protect his precious daughters, he left for himself too.

2. Jane/Lisbon (The Mentalist); Lisbon shot RJ; prompted by sirenofodysseus

where we're going, we can't come back, 137 words

At the last minute, she changes her mind and sends Cho to take the next shift with Hightower. She goes to the mall instead. Trust your instincts, she tells herself, and watch your back.

Jane has that look in his eyes, the crazy one that does not worry anyone but her, but she notices. Always, she notices. In some ways, she learned that from him. (In others, it was always there. She just never knew before.)

It’s not an easy shot, but she makes it appear that way. Bystanders scream and dive frantically for cover, but it’s over before they even know it began. Red John is dead on the floor, and Jane won’t look her in the eye. She is grateful for that one small mercy; she isn’t sure she could bear to see his hate.

3. Sam/Ainsley (The West Wing); in which Ainsley owns a bakery; prompted by magisterequitum

it was just the season, 275 words

On his way back from the Hill, he stops in at that new bakery, the one he heard Donna and Margaret talking about the morning he was late to senior staff meetings. (Well, one of the mornings.)

The woman behind the counter appears flustered, with flour on her face and a worried crease in her forehead. She doesn’t notice him at first (odd, given the cheerful bell that chimed when he opened the door); in fact, she doesn’t notice him at all until he steps up to the counter and asks for a blueberry muffin.

“Now you hold on just one second, mister,” she scolds, although with her slight drawl and the quick flow of her speech, it hardly feels like scolding. “Did I saw you could order yet? No, I did not. So don’t you just waltz in here and order without permission. We are out of blueberry muffins, we’re out of blueberry everything, so you’re just going to have to march back where you came from.”

That’s when he sees the flowers in the back corner of the room, the word “bitch” spelled in clear, bold script on the card. Instantly, he understands that this is a lot worse than a couple of burnt cupcakes or a cash register that sticks when you try to open it.

“I’m sorry,” he says, and when she finally looks him in the eye, she calms visibly.

She doesn’t say anything more and gives him a bear claw on the house for his trouble. When he’s halfway out the door, she calls out, “Come back tomorrow, and I’ll save you a muffin.”

He thinks that he will.

4. Will/Alicia (The Good Wife); Alicia hears both voice mails; prompted by watchyouwalk

the plan, 248 words

When she hears the second voice mail, she can barely breathe. Peter sits at the kitchen table discussing campaign strategy with Eli, the kids are with Jackie for the evening. She stands perfectly still in hall beside her bedroom, her eyes glued to her cell phone because this just can’t be real. Her heart thunders in her chest, and his voice echoes in her ears over and over. She hasn’t felt this way in what feels like a lifetime.

She gathers her purse and a light jacket. On her dresser, she catches sight of a picture of her with Peter and the kids at the beach the summer that Zach turned nine. She feels guilty, but only for a moment. She knows without a shadow of a doubt that they aren’t that family anymore, and no matter how hard she tries to patch things back together or how many times Peter apologizes (for exactly what, she still isn’t sure), they never will be again.

She tells Peter and Eli that she’s going out to run a few errands, and they’re back to their strategy session before she reaches the front door.

Outside, the evening air calms her nerves. She breathes in deep and tries to savor the moment, the decision. Her decision. Bad timing is just a poor excuse.

She doesn’t need speed dial; she knows his number by heart.

“Will -” her voice is clear and determined, she likes the way that sounds. “Let’s talk about a plan.”
