Who: Isabella and Guy
What: It's business time
Where: The castle
When: 7 June, late afternoon

Isabella couldn't help the spring in her step as she mounted the stone staircase to the castle. The weather was fine, the Sheriff was still gone, and best of all, she had been able to convince Thomas to leave her behind when he went back to Shrewsbury to check on his business. She could hardly imagine how things could be better. Well, there was one thing in particular, but she wasn't going to get ahead of herself.

The castle was cool and dark inside and, judging by the quiet, it seemed as if she had come at the right time, after most of the day's business. She just hoped that all had gone well during the day, and that Guy was in a good mood. This time, she brought no peace offering; he had seen right through the mince pies and they hadn't even done her any good. Instead, she did her best to remember the conversation she and Allan had had before Christmas, and to predict how what they had discussed might have changed, since the Sheriff had left.

She stopped for a quick word with one of the guards, who told her where he had last seen her brother. It had been ages since they'd had a conversation of any import; she'd been too angry to speak to him after he hadn't stood up for her when Thornton came, and then recently every time she saw him, her husband's words whispered, unbidden, in her memory: You were sold to the highest bidder. But today, she couldn't think of that; she needed to be at her most charming, her most persuasive. She didn't want him to have any reason not to trust her.

And there he was.

"Guy? Might I have a word?"
