Who: Caro(with Louise) and anyone who wants to join
What: Caro is on her way into Sherwood from visiting her parents in Locksley
Where: Between Locksley and her cave in Sherwood
When: December 30th, evening
Caro couldn't keep herself from glancing back at her adopted parents' house every few steps. She missed them, a lot, but she knew it wasn't really safe for her to visit too often, especially if a lot of the sheriff's men were around. Louise snarled and brought Caro back from daydreaming about her childhood with Jack and Martha. Louise barked, and Caro was quick to scold her, not realizing why the wolf-dog was acting up. Caro soon figured it out, though, as a rabbit, wild with fright, scampered out of the bushes. As much as Caro hated killing animals, being outlawed didn't exactly allow her the freedom to go to town and buy food.
"Louise, get him!" she commanded, knowing she was too close to town to be doing this, but missing too many opportunities could mean the death of her, as well as Louise. Louise, however, had no second thoughts as she quickly outran the smaller creature and seized it by the neck.
Louise shook her head violently, and, within minutes, the victim was dead. Caro sighed. She didn't like praising Louise for killing, but, the dog had obeyed her command, and they now had somewhat of a meal, and she patted Louise's head as the dog brought her the kill. "Good girl, Louise!"
She held the rabbit far away from her body, because the creature was quite bloody from Louise's attack. She kept walking, and Louise, having no reason to wonder, trotted obediently at heel, waiting for instruction. Caro had no direction to give, however, because their work was done. She had a little bit of bread that Martha had given her, despite her objection to being handed food. Her reply had been, "I will not rob you of your food, Mum, food is scarce, but I find a way."
Louise helping her hunt was exactly what Caro had meant by "finding a way." Caro rarely could kill a deer in one shot, because her aim was accurate, but her shots weren't powerful enough, but with Louise's help, she could sometimes bring down a deer for their meals. She personally had hated venison at first, but as winter took its toll on her choices of food, she soon came to love it.
When they were out of sight of Locksley, Caro sat down at the base of a large oak tree to rest. Louise joined her, and Caro, despite having to keep the rabbit out of her dog's reach, rather loved being able to sit and think about her past. Although, worry about her future often came up in her thoughts more than memories of when life was easy.
