Who: Joan and Allan
What: L'Amore! (maybe)
Where: The Trip
When: Friday, 22 October, after sundown
Joan was normally a fairly prosaic woman, but when she stepped outside to fasten the shutters and bring in her barber’s pole, even she noticed how gorgeous the sunset was. It was a good omen. Not that she needed one, though. It had been a good day, with enough business to be profitable but not so much as to be exhausting. There was no reason to think the night wouldn’t continue in that vein.
Now she was humming to herself as she fussed about her appearance. She had made a point of never, ever taking her smock off all day long so that her dress would remain unspotted, and that appeared to have paid off. She decided she could use a little fluffing up in the bodice department (always a sensitive subject with Joan) and tried tying a towel around her ribs to lift her breasts, but, from what she could tell with her small hand mirror, all that did was leave her looking like she had tied a towel around her ribs, so she gave up on that and settled instead for pinning her chemise to her bodice in such a way that it showed a little more flesh than normally. If she wore her new glass pendant, it would serve as an arrow pointing down to what cleavage she had, and that might be a better, more subtle effect, anyway. Then all she needed to do was brush her hair a hundred strokes so it would shine and dab a little sweet oil on her lips, and she was ready.
Allan had said to meet him at the Trip between sunset and the last set of bells. It was just getting dark when she got to the inn…and suddenly she hesitated in going in. Joan was usually conscientious about her appearance but didn’t especially try to impress. Tonight was different. Tonight she had A Date, and for the first time in what seemed like forever, she was a little nervous about how she looked. She steeled herself and opened the door.
There was a friendly bustle about the place, but you couldn’t say it was crowded, either. Joan first looked around the room for Allan. She was disappointed not to see see him, but then, it was still early in the time he had allotted. There wasn’t anything else to do but pick up a drink from the bar and settle into a table within sight of the door.
FYI.:
