How the Hunger Games SHOULD have ended...

The Hunger Games
Characters: Katniss, Peeta, Haymitch, Effie, Johanna
Rating: meh, not high
Warnings: none, just possible spoilers

a/n: Okay, I'd say don't read this because of spoilers, but to be honest, you probably could because if you don't know how the Hunger Games really ends then it could be taken for fact or completely out of fact. Either way, you probably shouldn't though. Just so you don't complain to me about anything I've given away ;)  Anyway, this is meant to be funny and in no way true. This is how I believe the stories should have ended.

Life had settled; Peeta was getting better day by day, and so was Katniss. Their home air calmed them, helped them relieve their minds, push back the horrors. And they helped each other, too.

Peeta moved in with Katniss, and this gave Johanna an excuse to make a scornful comment about not wanting to be a third wheel, and move into Peeta’s old house. She still spent 99% of her time in the house with them, as did Haymitch, but they had spaces to call their own.

The district built up around them, and they built themselves back up at the same time.

One morning, Peeta and Katniss decided to get up early to go and trade in the all new Hob. The winter air kept the meat Katniss had hunted fresh, so she didn’t trade it all at once, instead keeping it in the pantry and cutting off what they needed before taking to trade for other things such as coffee and oil.

Peeta had baked some pretty spectacular cakes and bread, too, so they were going to trade those too. It was a strange thing, to the 12’s of old, to be able to afford bakery bread and cakes. But everyone traded fairly now, and they all had something the others needed. People from 10 had brought livestock, people from 3 their talent with electronics, some of the people from Johanna’s home city brought their talents of conservation and use to the woodlands and 4 would pass by with some fish to sell. Things were a lot better.

Refugees from the Capitol had also spread out among the districts, bringing their hair dyes and tattoo pens to pass along their talents to the bored district residents. Peeta had come home with a mockingjay tattooed on his bicep, and both Johanna and Katniss had tutted and rolled their eyes at him, but Katniss was filled with a warm sort of glow as he smiled dopily at her from across the room. It was, really, quite a piece of work. She was considering a tattoo herself but couldn’t decide what to have done. Maybe a primrose, for her sister.

As they sat down to breakfast, Buttercup mewed at them, and Peeta fed him some scraps. The cat preferred Peeta to Katniss, but they had built up a relationship now. He even tolerated Johanna and Haymitch now.

Once they were done, they picked up the things they had to spare and walked out of the door. As they were locking it, Haymitch’s swung open, and just as Katniss opened her mouth to shout over and ask if he wanted anything, Effie wobbled out, straightening her dress with her wig slightly lopsided, a strange glow to her cheeks.

Katniss slapped Peeta on the arm, and after a “huh?” he turned just in time to see Effie’s jaw drop and her face go beetroot red. He raised a hand and said, “Hi, Effie,” as she shrieked and fell backwards into the doorway of Haymitch’s house.

Haymitch appeared behind her, ever fearing the worse, in his pants waving a knife. Katniss laughed.

“Haymitch, we know you can’t hit us from there with that.”

The knife went whizzing just past her ear in response.

Effie composed herself just enough to straighten her wig and mutter.

“This isn’t what it looks like.”

Haymitch smirked behind her and shook his head.

“It’s exactly what it looks like.”

He turned and went back inside, leaving Katniss and Peeta to laugh as Effie shrieked in outrage and clutched her chest, before she turned and attempted to run after him down the hall in ridiculously high heels.

Peeta turned to Katniss, and extended his hand.

“Never would’ve seen that one coming.”

Katniss laughed, and took his hand in her free one.

“Oh, I’m not so sure.”
