I normally read to inform myself, but lately I've had occasional itchings to stimulate my imagination and read some science-fiction. But the genre is so male-dominated that I usually get turned away as soon as I start browsing the science-fiction shelves at Bookmans. It's also a very white and very First World genre. I wish there was more out there that was written from a different perspective, one that doesn't already saturate our media environment.

I can't quite put my finger on the reason for it, but I also have an aversion to novels that are part of a series. Perhaps experience is the root of that aversion. I liked Octavia Butler's stand-alone novels, but her series novels--those that I've read so far--haven't really done it for me.

Maybe I'll eventually stumble upon an author worth checking out. Until then, I guess I'll stick with my non-fiction, even if I'm currently in a spell in which it doesn't hold my attention as well.
