Who knew my knowledge of music might be of use to the hipsters at
Trader Joe's? Some time before the holidays, I was shopping at the store on Campbell when a song by
Gomez started playing on their sound system. I overheard an employee asking the others if they knew what song was playing. I interjected that I didn't know the song's title, but that the band was definitely Gomez. (I later remembered the title: "
How We Operate.") He must have liked the song, because he wrote down "Gomez" on some receipt paper after I told him.
I think it was
Joe who first recommended
Mr. Scruff to me. Ever since, I've been looking for his music whenever I'm at a CD shop or anywhere else with CDs for sale. I finally found a copy of
Keep It Unreal at
Zia Records, and I've been hooked on the song "
Blackpool Roll" ever since. I'll have to thank Joe for leading me to him.
Originally slated for a March release,
tim_wise's next book,
Between Barack and a Hard Place: Racism and White Denial in the Age of Obama, seems to have been given a January release date (perhaps the idea being that a release date closer to the Inauguration would help sales), but neither
the publisher nor
Amazon.com is giving a date more specific than "January 2009." Hopefully the wait won't be long.
I saw a Korean game called Jung Stone (if I remember correctly) when I went to
Game Daze to buy
my hourglasses. It looked similar to dominoes, but most of the text on the package was in Korean, so I couldn't tell if it was something that would be easy to learn and fun to play. I asked my mother (over the phone) if she had heard of it, but the name and description didn't ring a bell. Oddly enough, I couldn't find anything about it on the Internet, even though there's information about all kinds of obscure things on the Internet. I guess it will have to remain a mystery.
