things that go bump in the knight

Saturday I woke up and got a cactus spine in my big toe as I was stumbling about the house. It was a shitty way to start my day, but at least it gave me a reason to use that tweezer set I bought a while back.

The day got better. My sister came over in the morning so that we could get a birthday package ready for my niece.

In the afternoon I went to the Friends Meeting House to attend an informative talk on how Diebold is destroying the last vestiges of democracy in the United States. I also finished reading A People's History of the United States. It took me a pathetically long time to read it, but at least I can now say I finished the book, instead of being one of the many people who have read parts of it. Now I can move on to one of several partially finished books for my next read.

I thought I had helped make history--or at least Howard Zinn's history--when I read this little bit: "In Arizona...600 citizens signed a newspaper ad that...called on the United States and the international community 'to shift resources away from the destruction of Afghanistan and toward the removing the obstacles that prevent sufficient food from reaching those who need it.'" (It was in the final chapter, added to the 2003 edition.) After I read that, I went to my collection of any and all newspapers in which my name has appeared in letters to the editor, interviews, and whatnot. I rummaged through them until I found the issue of the Arizona Daily Star with the anti-war ad I "signed" by donating money. Howard Zinn must have been talking about a different ad. The one I signed only had about 200 names on it, and the quote about Afghanistan is nowhere to be found. Fuck it. I'll never be a part of history.

I spent Saturday evening with nosty and lunarcamel at the Tucson Roller Derby. It was fun to watch after I figured out the rules and objectives of the game. If it weren't for the noise there, I probably could have listened to lunarcamel explain everything to the old guy who was sitting next to her.

I spent the rest of Saturday evening--and the majority of Sunday--with solcell. Four hours of Sunday were also spent with locakitty, bryanhelm, clockworkalien, and Joe at The Coffee Vein. I had no idea locakitty could speak barista so fluently.
