Afterward
Some time after Obito's death, Rin gently took Kakashi's hand to lead him to Obito's grave. Kakashi followed and thought vaguely in the back of his mind, Sensei is behind us...
They stood together, the first time after Obito died, and maintained a respectful silence. Finally, Rin spoke. "Kakashi, talk to him. It will make him feel better." She did not say the words they were all thinking. It will make you feel better.
Rin stepped back, but Kakashi remained silent for awhile. He sat, staring at the tombstone. "Obito," he said, then winced. It sounded so loud. "Obito," he said, softer. "I...I told Rin about your...your feelings. I hope you don't mind. I'm not doing that great of a job taking care of her though. I'm sorry."
There was a muffled, strangled sob behind him, but he paid it no attention. "I...I'll come often. Really."
He stood quickly and left quickly, the wind drying up the water in his eyes. It was a while before he finally realized that Rin and Sensei were trying to catch up to him. He stopped abruptly and turned.
Rin managed a trembling smile. "Well?"
After a pause, he said thoughtfully, "It was hard."
--
Years later, no Rin and no Sensei, he approached Obito’s grave.
"Obito," he said as he sat. "I passed my first team today." He gave a hidden smile towards the tombstone. "I told them what you told me Obito." Those in the ninja world who break rules and regulation are called trash, but those who don't care about their friends are even worse than trash.
He sat a moment longer, thinking about how very easy it was to talk to Obito, even after death.
