Notes: Set between France’s games against Lithuania. Gignac was called up for this round of WC qualifiers and subsequently asked in a press conference whether he was the first Gypsy to play for the French national team. He missed the first match due to a minor injury.
"How’s your thigh?"
"Fine. It feels good."
Domenech nodded, face betraying nothing. That seemed to be all, and he turned to go.
"André-Pierre." Domenech’s tone was thoughtful but distant, airy. He caught his momentum, hand on the doorframe, and looked back over his shoulder. "Cantona. He was the first gypsy to play for les Bleus."
Before he could even open his mouth, Domenech had returned his attention to the papers spread in front of him. He doesn’t say it, but the response is obvious. Cantona wasn’t a gypsy, he thinks as he steps into the empty hallway. Cantona was Cantona.
