“Why do people say ‘the first cut is the deepest’?” Cassano enquired idly as they waited in A&E. “I mean, the first cut is when you’re, like, twelve. With a penknife or something.”
“I don’t know. Stop picking at it.”
“I’m not picking at it!”
“Yes, you are! You’re flicking bit of it everywhere! Stop, it’s disgusting!”
“Well,” Cassano said absently, tearing polystyrene cups apart instead, “It’s true, yeah? I mean, when you first do stuff like that, you use like, a compass...”
“Then they didn’t mean it physically,” said Mancini.
“Oh,” said Cassano, then, after a while, “Guess not.”
