He'd never been anyone's favorite. He'd been well-liked, certainly, appreciated on occasion, but a favorite? No one ever thought of Mathieu as a favorite. Last season only Birmingham wanted him, and now everyone begged him to stay.
Cesc had pleaded. Cesc had yelled, ranted, tried to keep him in London. It was gratifying, in its way. Mathieu wished it was sooner. It would have worked before, too. He would have been happy enough to be needed, even if it wasn't the need he wanted. Now he accepted that he would never be Cesc's favorite. Now, he needed to move on.
