I sit on the step watching you kick the ball up against the wall, your tongue sticks out of your mouth as you concentrate, the way it did when we were kids. You try to balance it on your knee but you were never much good at anything like that. “What will we do when it ends?” I ask. You look over and the ball drops to the ground. “Other things,” you say, trying to roll it onto your foot “but it’s not going to happen, quite,” you manage to keep the ball in the air for one “yet.”

The scarf is some sort of silky material but it must be dark coloured because I can’t see through it. You breathe against my ear as you whisper closely something I can’t understand, then the bed shifts and I start as I feel your hand on my skin. You like that and you laugh. Do it, I think, do whatever you like, I don’t care. I didn't tell you but you know that I have given in. The only part I don’t want now is when you move away and I can’t feel your warmth against me anymore.
