Timo doesn't even know why he's here, or why he's wearing that goddamn white suit from four years ago. Well, alright, it was hard to find a better piece of formal attire than a perfectly tailored Strenesse suit, but still, it was filled with memories that were not helping Timo's emotional situation.
Four years ago. Timo had still been on the national team then, had still had a sliver of hope to one day be the starting keeper. He had traveled with the team then, trained with them, gotten the opportunity to be part of a team making the home country proud. He was riding a high with Stuttgart, ready to start a season that would later prove to be the high of his career. He had just beaten Olli's Bundesliga minutes without concession record.
And back then, Timo had Philipp.
Timo sighed as memories flooded his vision. The day of the photoshoot, and Philipp timidly approaching him afterwards, with that trademark flush - "You look amazing in that suit" - a quick, barely perceptible first kiss. Getting room assignments afterwards, entering together, making good on the promise made with that first kiss, holding tight, falling deep, losing breath. The game against Costa Rica, that first goal in front of countrymates and the world, watching with joy and elation as Philipp brushes teammates off to hold Timo tight. That night, hugs and touches and kisses and the first brushes of skin on skin.
But it had not been enough. Philipp's loan had ended, and he returned to Munich; Timo moved on to Valencia; Timo had been dropped from the team while Philipp kept routinely starting, eventually receiving the armband for himself. The emotional high of 2006 had waned. They had moved on.
And now Timo watched, in white, his back to the wall in this beautiful church, watching Philipp flash his beautiful smile to someone else, promise eternal happiness and loyalty to someone else. And Claudia looks perfect in white, ethereal, surreal. He knows they are happy together. He knows he should be happy for them.
Timo gulps, closes his eyes. Their happiness is too much to watch. He excuses himself from the ceremony, claiming to need the restroom half-heartedly. It is only when he steps outside into the beautiful Bavarian sunlight that he allows himself to cry.
