..Well it's less than an hour 'til Christmukkah. And yes, tomorrow is more Christmukkah than most because both holidays/festivals start on the same day. But Chanukah is obviously ultimately cooler because it then continues for another seven days. Yay! And our family is obviously cooler than the Cohens because we are more dysfunctional (at least Sandy and Kirsten are actually still married, though she may be an alchoholic) and we *are* actually completely Jewish...OK so maybe we should only be celebrating Chankukah, but you get better presents if you do Xmas as well..
Lalala what else was I going to say?
Well, got home from uni just over two weeks ago. Crashed. Then went to Prague.
Prague was amazingly wonderfully cold! And pretty. And gothic. And very Czech, surprisingly...
We stayed in Dave's friend's apartment on the end of one of the metro lines there, in Cerny Most (black bridge - see, I can speak Czech..) and it was in one of the old Soviet five-storey apartment blocks - breezeblocked and graffitied (a sign of resentment against the dictator-like Soviet rule I think) - but very liveable-in and we had it all to ourselves for three nights. It was a 4-minute walk to the Metro station, a 25-minute train ride for 50p and Mike, who owned the apartment, was there with his girlfriend for the first night to show us around, which was useful.
Prague is so damn cheap!! A three-course meal for seven quid. Pretty amber earrings for less than ten quid. Bargainous indeed!
We spent most of the time (when we actually decided to get up) wandering the city, as it's very walkable and this is the best way to see it all. It was cool walking by day to get to know the streets a bit, and then seeing the beauty of the capital transformed by sunset and darkness; the old Town Square has an amazing gothic building in it, the Tyn Church, that could have been straight out of Batman's Gotham City - a menacing version of the Disney Magic Kingdom Castle - it just looked utterly surreally fake and just part of a film set. There's another beautiful Art Deco theatre (remember looking around it on the Berlin-Prague trip?) that would have been well worth seeing a concert in if we'd had enough money; having said that, we had a drink in the bar, amazingly decorated, for cheaper than one could get a decent coffee anywhere in England (about 60p). Then there's St. Vitus' Cathedral, staring down at you from the Castle - the most breathtaking building when one stands right next to it, from all angles and sides.
Anyway, I quite impressed myself with the organised-ness of all our sightseeing. And there was plenty of time for drinking mulled wine, MEAD (quite possibly the nicest hot alcoholic drink ever - honey with a kick, yum yum yum) and hot chocolate (why can't they make it with molten chocolate like that here?! also yum yum yum..) and walking around in the snow/blizzard (or keeping out of it as the case may be to prevent one's feet from going numb..). Had a lovely time, with a lovely boyfriend who basically I'm glad I love so much.
Got home and the next day saw the Foos at Earl's Court - very cool, thanks to Mat for getting the ticket for me (for probably two birthdays!). I could have sworn it was the fifth time I'd seen them this year, but maybe it was only the fourth; anyway, they put on a damn good show, as ever. Supergrass supported, which was damn cool - I love all of their played hits, but they're one of these bands whose songs I never know who they're by, but tend to adore, so when they started playing all these cool songs, it was a happy moment :) Best support I've seen the Foos have, although Ash were quite a good band too!
So yeah, my only problem with the Foos is that they have too much stuff released now, and they have to play stuff off their new albums and that everyone knows, even though the lesser-known stuff off their first two albums tends to be SO much better. Although they played Big Me (yay!). And I still can't help going CRAZY when they play Up In Arms. So simple, but still such a genius of a song; my legs jump me up and down without my hardly knowing what's happening!
And Dave Grohl is a legend. And Nate and Chris, poor underrated members; everyone knows the wonderfully talented and gorgeous Tay and Dave and forgets about the other two :(
Raaah long entry. Saw people for drinking for 6 hrs today, it's always so lovely to see people, one forgets how much one misses them. Love you all :)
And MERRY XMAS/CHRISTMUKKAH to everyone reading this (if they've got this far)
And NO I will NOT use LJ cut. What do you take me for?!
