I know a few people who didn't even know what Pitch Black was until I told them, yet they knew about The Chronicals of Riddick. Since Pitch Black was more of an underground hit, I'm guessing they are just basing the title off of the popularity of the second movie.

That makes sense. Though Riddick didn't seem to get as much publicity here as Pitch Black did. So I guess it's an American thing.
