I went to the cinema with a friend today and saw The Kite Runner.
It was good, slow, wonderful filming of kites in the air (I'm pretty sure this is not what I was supposed to focus on, but those sequences really gripped me!), and really believable cultural portrayals, except for the lack of women. I haven't read the book, but in the film the almost complete lack of female characters seemed quite strange - no relationship of any kind with women or girls all through the story, except when the main character meets a girl he immediately falls for and decides to marry... uhm, not very believable. Yes, his mother died giving birth, but where are his aunts and grannies and cousins etc.? - most Afghan families are vast in numbers and quite closely knit. Anyway, I picked up the pocketbook edition of the book on my way home, so I'll have a go at reading that and see how it is.
One more day of the holidays left - Tuesday the girls go back to school.
