[So what's the best thing for someone who's been spending their time alternately fretting and pretending not to be fretting over circumstances well beyond their control

Oh hell yeah. [He's grinning, has a bo-ken resting on his shoulder and still has some of his slightly roughed-up gear on - apparently sparring with a Garchomp leads to the pads getting chewed up, who knew?]
Not that I don't mind trainin' th'team or anythin', but I missed actually gettin' a chance t'be out on the field myself, an' who knows what people from other worlds are gonna come up with!
[You have never seen someone so enthusiastic about the possibility of getting his ass beaten in new and unusual ways.]
I mean, okay, the whole Pokemon-battle thing's grown on me a bit since I got here, but... nothing replaces just... GETTING in there and doing the job yourself, y'know?
[It's not that Heather likes HAVING to fight, but... she does like fighting. It gets the blood pumping.]
No kidding. I love gettin' t'teach, don't get me wrong, but I didn't get t'be Taisho back home just by sittin' on th'sidelines. Nothin' quite like th'challenge, eh?
[Actually be careful of what you say, he's adapted sword technique to pipes, crowbars, and stray pieces of wood before, he might be compelled to try and teach a few tricks.] An' I'd be lyin' if I said I wasn't curious how I'd measure up t'the people who do it for a living back where they're from.
[He's grinning.] You're lucky on that one. [Sure, he's been in fights before - and a few against people that were DAMN good - but it's not exactly something he's had to do to survive for any extended period. OTOH, he actually has had a formal education in it, sooo...]
Even if we lose, we get t'learn a few tricks, right? 'Sides, I wouldn't be above lookin' for a few sparring partners t'go up against now'an'then.
[Yeah, Heather had learned in... that way where if you didn't learn fast, you DIED. Sure, she'd busted her knuckles on more than a few faces before that, but it turns out desperation can be the best teacher.]
Yeah, I HAD one but we're in different places so much it doesn't happen much anymore. [She misses sparring with Liquid, even if the big lug did always cheat. :(]
[That it is, and just as good as a formal one, really - it doesn't take much if you manage to survive. Heiji, for his part, is forever going to twitch about cheating bastards with poisoned weapons, among other things.]
Yanno, if you're around Goldenrod right now, I'm pretty free; Wani's a pretty good challenge but there's a big difference between sparrin' with a dragon that's bigger'n you an' another person. Used t'swords, but I've got a couple spare shinai around...
Look me up when y'get here - there's always a way out'f a box if y'look. [What him encourage this sort of thing never - ]
'Sides, whatever happens in the tournament can't be worse'n gettin' carpet-bombed by explodin' bugs! [Heiji, you are entirely too happy about past injuries.]
[That's the spirit. 8D Even if this seems more like mixed-martial-arts bets-may-be-off than you know, normal martial arts sport-matches...]
Hell yeah - Yanno what they say, bumps an'bruises build character! [Says the guy who's known for finding many new and creative ways to get injured.] An' even outside'f Johto, I dunno what your experience is, but one tangle with guns or poisoned swords an' somethin' like this? Psssh. [Yes, there are scars to go with that quip.]
[Yeah, and Heather's known for finding many new and unusual ways to DIE. Good thing she had Valtiel around to keep putting her back together again, right?]
Nothing this place could throw at me can top the stuff I've seen and done at home.
[She won't elaborate on that, but Heiji will... probably get the impression that under that smug tone, she is dead serious.]
[Oh, he catches that one - it's not an unfamiliar shift in tone.]
Heh. Maybe you're one of th'ones I should be worryin' about, eh? [Granted, he's kind-of incapable of being intimidated - it's more gentle teasing, although there's a stray hand shifting his hat in half-salute.]
[That's both a good thing, and usually a hallmark of the REALLY scary ones.]
Here's hopin' we both manage t'have some luck with this then, eh? Give everyone who thinks they've got it wrapped up a nice surprise. [And he adds a lazy grin-] Just don't think I'm gonna go easy on ya if we get matched up.

Same here, actually.
There's a lot of professionals here.
But I've had a few tips from some of 'em, sooooo...
[... Heather that does not replace a formal education in fighting SURE YOU KILLED A GOD BUT DON'T GET COCKY KIDDO SERIOUSLY.]

I'll be comin' down for the tournament a couple days ahead of time, though.
Assuming Dad doesn't put me in a box and tape it shut to stop me from leaving.

[... And it's okay. Heather's honestly not that intimidating until you see her really angry.]
