[Naoto looks a little concerned.] Do all Pokemon get that large when they evolve?

Well, not... all of 'em.

Arty got pretty big when she evolved, but she's still like... roughly the size of a really long dog.

But honestly I don't have many Pokemon who've evolved, so...

That's... a relief. [she was worried. she has enough large Pokemon already, with the ones she inherited from previous-Naoto.] I don't think I have the budget to feed them all if they were that large.

Yeaaah, they do get pretty big, but... on the bright side, the stronger the people you battle are, the more money you get when you win, so...

That's helpful. Battling has been easy enough, I admit, so I haven't been suffering terribly in terms of money. [though it feels a little like cheating. old-Naoto's Pokemon are so overpowered.]

I actually need to be doing more of it... I've been circlin' the drain!

The spoils from this fight should keep me going for a bit longer, though.

Do you get considerably better payouts when you defeat the gym leaders?

Well, yeah! I mean, they always have much bigger cash prizes than some random kid betting his pocket-money in battles on the side of the road.

I hadn't quite thought of it that way, but it does make sense. There certainly do seem to be quite a lot of incentives to beat the leaders in place.

Well, it's definitely somethin' to do... and the natives respect you a little more if you've got some badges on your belt... so it's a good way of getting past that 'Oh, you're one of those ~otherworlders~' thing a little...

I see. Is there one in Goldenrod City?

A gym?

Yeah, there's gyms in just about every city... well, 'cept for Cherrygrove... but that's not so much a city as it is a collection of beach shacks...

[a faintly amused look] I didn't stay in Cherrygrove for very long, thankfully. Are there any gyms that are harder or easier than others?

Hmm... I dunno, most of 'em have been fairly easy for me... [Not counting the first battle against Falkner, which had wound up being an abysmal failure thanks to the fact that Cujo's before-then-unknown-to-Heather ability to breathe fire had pretty much derailed her entire battle strategy.]

I'll have to consider challenging one, eventually. It seems like there's no reason not to.

It's somethin' to do, all right.

Plus, gets you a little respect from the locals, which is kinda nice.
