Aldaily.com posted a link to an article in Edge, where 100 intellectuals were asked what they were optimistic about for the future. I was amused that a lot of them were prophesying the end of faith, religion, and God in the face of science and progress. It was quaint in a "end of the 19th century" sort of vein.

I don't share in the panic that many Christians have about these pronouncements, primarily because people have predicted this sort of thing for centuries. Some atheists I know seem kind of unnerved by my lack of concern however, and it puzzles them. When I'm asked why the impending death of God does not shake me, I've always had a vague notion in my head to lean in and whisper conspiratorially that I believe he already died. It is the response that I think all who live under the Cross believe, although they most often do not articulate it.

And now some appropriate passages of verse from "The Ballad of the White Horse", wherein King Alfred addresses the nihilistic philosophy of the invading Danes:

That on you is fallen the Shadow
And not upon the name;
That though we scatter and we fly
And you hang over us like the sky
You are more tired of victory
Than we are tired of shame

That though you hunt the Christian man
Like a hare on the hill-side
The hare has still more heart to run
Than you have heart to ride

That though all lances split on you
All swords be heaved in vain
We have more lust again to lose
Than you have to win again
