Assuming my Leave chit gets approved I'll be coming home for Christmas. That's a rather nice thought, there. A plane would clean me out, buses are no bueno (no bueno at all), so I'll be taking a train home. That actually seems like a rather lovely idea. I've never taken a train before and they are lovely creatures. Amtrak stops in New Orleans for the night no matter what schedule I pick so on the way home and the return trip I'll be spending a night in NOLA. I've never been there (had a couple half-baked and retarded schemes to check it out after Katrina, but they never flew), and I'll probably be there all by my lonesome. I've already been from one end of the country to another by myself and managed it OK, so that's been a trip. Anyone know much about NOLA? Any/all advice, tips, anything is begged for.
I'll be staying at a hostel both nights, chilling out there with the world-travelers, vagabonds and freebooters. Mill about the French Quarter and cemetaries or something. Buy some trinkets maybe, who knows. New Orleans at Christmastime sounds nice. So far it looks like I'll be getting into Houston and stepping off the train in my crackerjacks and sailor hat, world-weary and well-traveled, on Christmas Eve. Imagine that one.
