Yuletide rec time, part two

Dec 28, 2010 20:01

After I got to the halfway point, I skipped to the bottom of the list and read back from there. (And a rec of a rec found its way in here.)

The Curse of the Bambino (And Other Love Stories), You Belong With Me parody video
Sometimes, crushes can lead you to do stupid things. Like pretend to know anything about baseball.
Adorable friends hanging out! With mutual crushes not as yet acknowledged as being mutual. And a list of things known about baseball.

Something in the Water, Warehouse 13
Set Season Two, post Vendetta, Artie & Claudia have a strange friendship, one that thrives on root beer and kettle corn.
Artie had a bad day, Claudia had a bad day, and they both try to hide from it in the same place. This is a great look at their family/friend dynamic.

Give Us Those Nice Bright Colours, Warehouse 13
Of all the Artifacts to smuggle out of the Warehouse, a View-Master is not the most practical, but Myka is going to save the world.
I had the immense pleasure of beta-reading this one; it takes what we were given in the S2 finale and puts a hopeful light on it.

Joshua Donovan Does 'Secret Santa', Warehouse 13
Joshua talks us though the events of 2.13 - Secret Santa
In conclusion, Joshua Donovan is made of Win and there needs to be more fic about him.

Now You See Me, Now You Don't, Warehouse 13
Claudia gets in over her head when she and Pete are sent to investigate a ghost town.
Claudia gets stuck solving the mystery more or less by herself, and does an awesome job of it. This is a totally awesome case fic.

We Regret to Inform You, Warehouse 13
Mrs. Frederic enjoys most parts of her job, but not this. Never the notifications, telling a person whose only crime was attaching themselves to a Warehouse staff member that their loved one wouldn't be coming home. She reflects on the losses in her own life as she tells a friend's family of his death.
This is heartbreaking, totally necessary after "Buried," and a wonderful insight into the way Mrs. F approaches her job.

Creative Writing 101, Toy Story 3
So where did you start with a Creative Writing class, exactly? His specialty was pre-Victorian Romantic lit. Not…contemporary student pseudo-dramas.
Futurefic in which Andy is teaching college and Bonnie is one of his students. Features a lovely story-within-a-story and very tasteful handling of an age-gap romance.

The Red Card, Andrew Bird's The Mysterious Production of Eggs
A palindrome is the same thing backwards and forwards. A fake palindrome just looks that way.
"Fake Palindromes" fic; it's a pretty dark take on the song (warning: very unhealthy relationship!), but just as awesome as the song itself.

This Town We're Painting, St Trinian's
She'd never expected to find herself a government employee. But these days Kelly had a boss who'd never once tried to hit on her, an expense account of apparently exospheric height, and a job that was almost as fun as outright crime.
Kelly keeps doing what she does best, and her school friends are there every step of the way. Brilliant futurefic with a crossover that I might be the only person who missed until the tail end.

Spy Vs Spy Who Came In from the Cold, Spy Vs Spy
He woke up not quite himself.
What I adore here is the totally AWESOME formatting, with the coffee cup stains and the margin notes and the giant swath of redacted text. (There's a text-only version underneath.)

The Times They Are A Changing, Pleasantville
Nothing that happened in the world ever touched Pleasantville.
The outside world starts to works its way into Pleasantville's everyday life. It's in turns heartbreaking and AWESOME.

Athena's Flute, Percy Jackson and the Olympians
Annabeth is on a quest to retrieve Athena's Flute.
I feel like I somehow became the go-to PJO beta-reader this year; I beta-read all three of the stories I'm reccing, and they are all totally awesome. This one has Annabeth on a solo quest, saving the day and taking a second to geek out over architecture.

Lighting up the sky, Percy Jackson and the Olympians
Annabeth takes Percy out on a nighttime trip.
A quiet moment at Camp Half-Blood, for a change. It's a nice contrast to all the chaos we usually see in canon.

A Nice Normal Evening, Percy Jackson and the Olympians
All Percy wanted to do was take Annabeth out for a nice, normal evening. He should have known better in hindsight.
You have to give the kids credit; even though they're trying to be Normal Teenagers for the night, when they realise there are Greek shenanigans afoot, they still investigate. This is a great coda to the first series.

As the Sea Will Allow, fairy tales
"A selkie." Jeannette vaguely remembered that word from stories she'd read far too many years ago -- from fairy tales.
A modern retelling of the selkie myth, with a twist beyond the fact that the selkie catches a woman's eye.
