I don't know that I would call it a scam, necessarily. I certainly don't think it's something any business should get into lightly, nor should they consider it a way to bring in money, necessarily. It's more about the exposure and long term benefits of that. Short term - a business should hope to break even on a groupon deal at best.
I personally have tried several new places I had either never heard of or would have never ventured to on my own without a bit of prodding, but went to after taking the plunge on a groupon or livingsocial deal. I would venture to say at least a third, up to half, have been places I've since returned to on my own without a special. I am also friends with a couple of business owners who have put themselves out on groupon and have seen lasting booms in their business overall for months after the groupon special expires (granted, both of them are more in the ongoing service or classes type industry rather than tangible goods).
