Hello Internets! Let's talk about what I've been eating for the first two weeks of this year.
A little over three months ago I made a bet with Stefan - whether or not I could quit smoking cold turkey for two months solid. I won that bet, thankyouverymuch, and happily have also just kept on with the non-smoking thing.
The reason I won the bet was simple. The prize was food. I will win any bet that ends in food every damn time, especially if it's "dinner of my choice". And my choice was tartare.
A gorgeous little mound of raw fillet. Dressed up to my taste with the provided condiments (first photo above - booze, onions, pepper, sauce) - but only in small doses, that meat is delicious as-is.
It always starts out polite enough, carefully arranged and with moderate amounts of butter.
However,
by the end of the meal it's a smear of meat and lumps of butter and big indulgent bites. It's SO good. Much better than cigarettes.
Who wants more raw meat?
New Year's Eve was spent with Leo, so of course there was steak from Uruguay involved.
Thrown into a hot fondue bourguignonne pot for 10 seconds
Perfect.
That night we also killed the last of the ibérico, with some of my focaccia
So long, little pig leg. I'll miss you. Incidentally, I spent about 5 hours on that bread and it turned out particularly fantastic.
(For some reason, Leo thought drinking Corona would be a good idea. I had one for nostalgia's sake. Ug.) There were also home-made tapas by Leo - he soaked octopus and shrimp and mushrooms for two days in something delicious, I don't know what, and then baked them up when we arrived. Wonderful.
Completely Random:
We've been eating these. Chips that are flavored like Züri Gschnätzlets. They actually taste like it!! Somehow gross and wonderful at the same time. o_O
I roasted a chicken and then made soup the next day. Roast chicken soup is pretty much all it takes to make me happy.
Also makes me happy - drinking beer outside. Really, one of my favorite things ever. And
yesterday it was actually warm enough to walk down to the Dirty Joe and grab a glass on the patio. January Schmanuary. Thanks, Föhn!!
And of course
I'm delighted to tell you that I'm eating asian food with some regularity again. We've been going to the Scent of Bamboo in the Rapperswil Bahnhof and enjoying all of it. I've been making my way through the giant Noodle Soup Menu they offer
Surprisingly authentic (except for the price). I'm trying to decide where to spend my vacation this year and meals like this have put Cambodia back in my brain...
Happy January, Happy 2011. Let's eat everything.
