I've made my kids all sorts of birthday cakes over the years, everything from Thomas the Tank Engine, to a 2 foot tall Dalek cake, so I guess it's appropriate my first post to this community be about birthday cakes. But for one of the little boy's 4th birthday I scaled things right back. You see, he has been diagnosed with autism, and part of that means he likes holding cake in his hands (sensory, if he can't hold the whole thing it's not real, therefore he ignores it) so instead of making a slab cake, I made him a chocolate feast of cupcakes (butterfly & chocolate buttercreme topped with sprinkles) light and dark chocolate crackles, and mini pavlovas, with chocolate milkshakes to wash it all down.
