On a recent vacation to Aitutaki, one of the Cook Islands group in the Pacific Ocean, I was lucky enough to eat at Tupuna's Restaurant five out of seven nights. Tupuna is an older female chef who has clearly been cooking the fruits of the sea for a long time. Her lobster is cooked simply and dished up with a melted butter and garlic sauce that sets off the succulent sweet flesh perfectly. A tiny tug with a fork and the whole tail peels out of the carapace in one flick of the wrist. Three glossy islands cats keep away the mice, and appreciate the roe if it isn't to your taste. Your feet are gently cushioned by a sand floor in this atmospheric island restaurant housed in half of a domestic house. It doesn't get more real than this place.
