I'm 24 and have high cholesterol; a gentleman that I work with is 65, eats TERRIBLY and has normal cholesterol. Makes no sense.

Got it in one. Often, being a vegetarian (as I am) doesn't help much at all...

That makes me sad. I haven't been tested again since I started eating vegetarian (...I prob should do that), but I just generally feel better all together.

So... I've been a vegetarian, but my diet hasn't been fabulous all my life. I was tested at 29, and had cholesterol of 265 (!!!!!), tweaked a few things (eating oatmeal for brekky, increasing veg, decreasing my tendency to live on fruit and bread and jam, etc) and lost a few pounds, and went down to 235 in a couple of months (still not good). What I've found is that the biggest impact, as a vego, is increased cardiovascular activity. They want me to try losing a bit of weight (carefully) since although I'm a healthy weight, I'm at the higher end of the weight range.

So since you were not vegetarian before and you've changed that to help with the cholesterol, it might help. But you should also make sure you're a healthy vegetarian as well (in the sense that it's just as easy to eat a crappy high fat diet as a vego).

Good luck!
