Juicing apples

This weekend we made a good incursion into the vast quantities of apples our garden has yielded this year - we made 22 litres of hand pressed organic apple juice, and it is absolutely delicious!

Washing the apples:

The press - a sturdy Polish apple press belonging to my father:

Grinding the apples:

And pressing the pulp:

We packed the raw juice in plastic bags and put it in the freezer, but you could also pasteurize and bottle it, it just felt almost sacrilegious to begin boiling the wonderful raw juice if we didn't have to - I'm glad we have a very large freezer.

You can see more step-by-step images of the process in this set on Flickr: Juicing Apples. It took almost three hours of continuous work to do this, and then half an hour to clean up afterwards, but it's definitely worth it.
