Best Chicago Restaurants

HIp, hip, hooray!  We will be in Chicago next week and have snagged a reservation to Alinea for Sunday night.  We will try Everest on Tuesday night, but Wednesday night is still free.  We were not impressed with Frontera Grill.  We've been to Tru (and ate in the kitchen with a large party -- spectacular!).  What are we missing?  Custom House?

Hot Doug's

what didn't you like about Frontera Grill, the 2007 James Beard award winner for outstanding restaurant?

There is better Mexican food in California. It was OK, simply undistinguished. Certainly not as bad as the inedible meal we had Michael Mina.

Well yeah. :) No one can beat California for good Mexican food! I can understand exactly where you are coming from, being a California native all my life, going to Tennessee and being disappointed in their "mexican" food. :P

Sushi Wabi, or if you like your porn really pricey, NoMi at the Park Hyatt. :)

I can get great sushi in Hawaii and San Francisco. We were thinking more along the lines of the late restaurant Prairie (Contemporary American with an emphasis on local).

It's not the pricey so much as it is knock our socks off food, which unfortunately seems to be pricey. We would probably go with Berghoff for nostalgia's sake (we both lived in Chicago a long, long time ago), but it's closed, too.

I looked into NoMi. Thanks for the link.

I've read (and seen) so much about it, I am really, really looking forward to it.

We did eat at the Dining Room at the Ritz Carlton in San Francisco last month and they did have a Smoke course. Lovely.

My favorite sushi is at Sushi Toro in Lincoln Park, but that may be because the owner is such a nice guy; Sushi Wabi is excellent and I also had a great experience at Meiji. Since we're talking about Randolph St. I absolutely adore Red Light (get the green bean side if you go there--OMG). I can't wait to get back to Chicago!

For casual fare, Orange in Wrigleyville is an wonderful brunch spot--better on weekdays though, it apparently gets packed on weekends.
