Help!

Jul 04, 2006 10:00

I burnt my fingers on a habanero pepper last night, and they STILL hurt this morning. I know, I know, I should have worn gloves or been more careful, but that doesn't help now! Anyone have any tips on how to reduce the pain?

first aid, chiles

I think you should call your local hospital and ask for their advice.

In the meantime, try ice.

You are too funny. :-)

It wasn't intentional.

I haven't found anything that stops the burning anything like permanently, but I find that soaking my fingers in cool water helps while they're in it. Swimming might be a less boring way of achieving the same thing.

Suggestion: Go out and buy a big box of disposable gloves today. Then you won't be tempted to chop peppers without them next time.

cold milk or cream. Don't use skim milk, as it won't do any more good than water. The stuff that burns is an oil, so it's fat-soluble

That helped a little, until I took my fingers out of the milk. Oh well. Guess I've just got to wait it out!

Put a little whole milk into the tips of one (or two?) of your new Big Box of disposable rubber gloves. Wear them for a while.

Try rubbing oil or milk into your hands, then washing them. Capsaicin is fat-soluble, that should take most of it off.
