So a friend mentioned having something called Crab Miso. When I do a search, all I can find is Crab Miso Soup. She says it was a paste, so I'm assuming it was miso... as in miso... but with crab in it? Anyone know?

Kani miso is Japanese for crab tomalley. Kani means crab and the tomalley supposedly has the consistency of miso paste, which of course it doesn't. There is (was?) a stall in the Nishiki food market in Kyoto that sold a kani miso tofu - meltingly soft tofu infused with crab tomalley. It goes beautifully with green tea soba noodles and a light, soy and mirin sauce.

It is. They also have a crab roe version, which is a very pretty shade of orange, but a bit salty for my taste. If you are ever in Japan, Nishiki market is well worth a visit - I've found something new I'd never tried before every time I've gone there.

I lived on Okinawa for close to a year and loved it. I never got a chance to visit mainland Japan, but definitely want to go at some point.

I lived on Honshu for 4 years, one in Yokohama and Tokyo, which was ok, but then 3 years based in Kyoto. I travelled a fair amount around Honshu, Shikoku and Kyushu, but didn't made it to Hokkaido or Okinawa. Yet.
