I'm not sure if this has worked. I signed up to this community to be able to declare myself Ruler Of The World Of Food at people who might understand, instead of my flatmate who still buys economy mince and frozen potato croquettes. I'm going to post here too but while I was eating my tea tonight I couldn't avoid declaring my culinary superiority to my flatmate anyway.
My cooking style is generally to get a whole heap of veg, some starch or another, possibly some protein, and chuck it all together in whichever way seems best at the time. Tonight this has worked very well.
I chopped onion and garlic, sauteed them in a bit of sesame oil with some cayenne pepper, in a big oven-proof pot. Added in some chopped mushrooms and a can of tuna, cooked for a while longer with a little bit of turmeric and paprika (automatic reactions I have difficulty stopping) and some nori seaweed flakes, which I've also started putting in everything recently.
Meanwhile boiled some pasta and when it was nearly ready, added in some florets of broccoli and cauliflower. Drained when done.
Made a fairly thin cheese sauce with strong farmhouse cheddar and a bit of mustard in it. While that was heating up, added some chopped spinach to the tuna mix, letting it cook just long enough to wilt, and added some thyme.
Assembly - the tuna mix was pushed down into a layer over the bottom of the pot. The pasta/broccoli/cauliflower mix went on over that, then the cheese sauce over everything, and on top of that some more grated cheddar and some grated Applewood smoked cheddar. In the oven for about twenty minutes til the cheese looked right.
It turned out to be really tasty - the bit of sesame oil, the seaweed and the smoked cheddar made everything a bit darker and richer than a straightforward pasta and veg thing might otherwise be, whilst still being basically a big heap of filling stuff. Best of all, I've still got half of it left for tomorrow!
