grandmother Feistel's sweet dough recipe

This is the dough recipe I used for *my* Monkey Bread

1/4 c. warm water
1/4 c warm milk
1/4 c sugar
1/4 c soft shortening
1 pkg yeast
1/2 t salt
1 egg
2 1/4 - 2 1/2 C flour

Dissolve yeast in warm water. Add milk, sugar, salt, egg, sorthening and half the flour. Mix until smooth. Add enough flour to handle easily. Mix with hands. Turn onto lightly floured board and knead until smooth and elastic. Round in greased bowl, greased side up.
Let rise until double. Punch down.

Let rise until double again, shape into rolls or sticks, let rise again, bake at 400 about 20 mins.

(note - I made a double batch for the monkey bread. I only let it rise one time.)

This recipe was my GREAT grandmother's, passed down to me by my grandmother (her daughter in law). It's easy and good.
