Modern day, museum exhibit opening gala affair, artist was French but painted in Japan (where the museum is). What would be served? Artist lived in about 1840s if that makes a difference.
20th century,
menu,
cultural differences

Stick to finger foods - Grilled Rabbit "Chops" with herbs from provence (rabbit "chops" are tiny, and can be frenched with some effort, then sauteed, and seared with hash marks with a hot wire.
Authentic french would also be Pate and Terrine, served chilled.
There should also be some very traditional Japanese cuisine, such as pickled vegetables cured in salt, grilled fish, thinly sliced fresh fish (served grilled or raw in vinegar sauce), and a variety of sliced fruit and nuts.
Beverages should include a good Burgundy, a Champagne, a Beaujolais, and Sake.

Also thinking finger foods, but I was posting from the Wii and long posts are almost impossible.

To the OP: don't forget sweets. "Chou cream" (pastry puffs with cream inside), fruit tarts, cut sandwiches...

Then you can take the tiny rabbit chops and treat them just like pork chops or lamb chops.
